It is estimated that in South Africa 30 million eggs are consumed daily, and the number continue to grow as people are starting to healthy.
It is always advisable that if you are planning to start your own poultry farm business, before you begin, visit a running farm to attain a practical awareness about the functioning of a poultry farm.
One of the most crucial steps is to find the appropriate land for the business. This step is the costliest while setting up the business. The size of the land may vary depending on the type and scale of the business. Primarily, there are four types of poultry laying farms farms
1. Free Range Poultry Farm
Chickens run freely around the farm

2. Semi Range Poultry Farm
Chickens have small place to walk around

3. Battery Cage Poultry Farm
Chickens are in the cage full time.

4. Completely Wild Poultry Farm
Chickens have a very large space
Let’s start with building the house of chickens:

Know the number of chickens you want to start with.
Starting eggs laying farm is more expensive than broilers. We recommend that you start with at least 500 chickens upwards for you to see profit. Full setup for 500 chickens with food for the first 2 months is R120 000.
This quote doesn’t include chickens, 1120 chickens cost around R110 000 plus food for the first 2 months and medication. The full setup can cost R+-250 000
You can start small with 100 chickens. This cages can carry 96 chickens upwards.
Where to buy your chickens:

This are some of the most reliable suppliers around Gauteng. They deliver to other provinces.
Chickens start laying eggs at 18 to 25 weeks.
They begin laying from 18 to 25 weeks and can continue to do so until 72 to 120 weeks. Layer chickens can produce above 250 to 340 eggs per year, and they consume approximately 2.25 kg of feed a month
Chickens layer feed cost R260 - R380 per bag of 40 kg. 1000 chickens will consume 2 bags a day.
When do you buy chickens:

You can buy chicks 🐣 from day old for R1800 for 100. They take 5 months to fully grow and start laying eggs. Or buy chickens at 5 months from Growers for R85 to R120 per chicken. ( depends on location and quantity) they will start laying in a week.
Conducting effective marketing and advertising.
marketing poultry products in South Africa is easy because of high demand. One can sell the products in the nearest markets and further even transport them to nearby cities, depending on the production scale.
Make sure you buy your chickens at a reputable suppliers. Chickens should be fully vaccinated. After 18 weeks they don’t need much medication, just stress once a week, aloe, vitamin, calcium. Once you see a sick chickens isolate it and treat it. Prevention is better than cure
How to calculate feed for your chickens?

Chickens eat till they are full and have the energy to produce eggs. They consume around 100g to 140g feed in one day. Feed is taking 60% of your profit. The most expensive running costs. Feed them 3 times a day.
A chicken lays one egg in 24 to 26 hours. So always minus 5 to 10% of the number of chickens 100 chickens will lay 85 to 95 eggs in one day
There are lots of scammers in the farming sector. Please never pay someone you don’t know any money without seeing the chickens or eggs.
There are more than 100 types of chickens that lays eggs. The mostly used ones in South Africa:
