1. Very scary moment this week. My daughter fell at school & had a decent gash on her face. Pretty deep involving the eyebrow. Although the ER physician felt confident in being able to repair it, I asked for the professional courtesy of calling plastics.
2. The @EmoryMedicine plastics fellow came & repaired it in 2 layers & I know she will do well. I’ve thought a lot about the situation this week for 2 reasons. First, I’m blessed to be in a position to know the benefits of the repair by plastics & to be able to make that request
3. Second, the knowledge that a poorly healed scar on my daughter’s face will significantly affect her future socially, emotionally & even economically based upon what career she may want to pursue. Not thinking abt modeling but more about sales & any other client facing career.
4. This all comes back to the discussion about #healthequity. Unequal access to care that leads to the best healthcare possible goes beyond a single #healthcare encounter. WE HAVE TO DO BETTER @uche_blackstock @oni_blackstock @arghavan_salles @gradydoctor @kari_jerge @karenhunter

🧵1. My final contribution to this matter & its deeply personal & relevant. When I was 8 my right index finger got jammed in the door & nearly amputated the tip. At local ER my mother was told they would just have to amputate….
2. Bone was visible but not fractured. She stood firm that they should suture it the best they can and at least give it a chance to heal. By the grace of God & destiny (which we will get to later) it healed. We were grateful it did…
3. It was only later I realized the disparity in treatment received. There was no call to hand or plastics & no referral to the children’s level 1 trauma center that was only 30 min away. We were by no means well off, but had private insurance…
