It's #WorldPolioDay

Polio cases are down 99.9% since 1988, but the #COVID19 pandemic has set back vaccinations and placed this incredible progress at risk. Let's strengthen our efforts to #EndPolio and ensure that progress against this virus is not lost.
In 2020, after 4⃣ years without a case, @WHOAFRO has been certified as wild polio-free!

On this #WorldPolioDay, take a moment to learn about remarkable success against wild #polio in Africa.

#Polio is a highly infectious viral disease.
It’s transmitted from person-to-person mainly through the faecal-oral route or via contaminated water or food. It can invade the nervous system & cause paralysis.

It's #WorldPolioDay

Polio mainly affects children under 5 years of age.

There is no cure for #polio, but it can be prevented. Polio vaccine, given multiple times, can protect a child for life.

It's #WorldPolioDay

There are 3⃣ strains of wild poliovirus.

Type 2 and type 3 have officially been certified as globally eradicated.

Wild poliovirus type 1 still affects two countries:
🔸 Pakistan
🔸 Afghanistan

Two national #polio campaigns were recently announced in Afghanistan.

It is critical that health workers reach all children with vaccines to #EndPolio.

The 8 November #polio campaign in Afghanistan - the first national house-to-house campaign in over 3 years - will be followed by a second campaign, to be synchronized with Pakistan in December.

In many communities around the 🌍, women health workers help navigate social, cultural religious and political contexts to engage with communities. The #polio program’s strategy will continue supporting the women who are central in the fight to #EndPolio.
It's #WorldPolioDay

For decades, frontline vaccinators have worked to #EndPolio.

Join us in thanking them as they continue to vaccinate children, save lives, and combat this terrible disease.
It's #WorldPolioDay

#Polio workers leave a purple mark on the pinky finger of children they vaccinate. They also leave their mark on the 🌍 by providing other needed services like clean water, nutrition supplements, bed nets and much more. #EndPolio

Alongside their work to #EndPolio, polio workers:
✅Help distribute #COVID19 vaccines
✅Conduct surveillance for multiple diseases
✅Respond to health emergencies

In countries that are #polio-free, we help people repurpose these skills to improve a range of health outcomes!
The work of the #polio program doesn’t stop with a vaccine. The infrastructure created to #EndPolio around the world is being used every day to:
🏙️ promote cleaner, safer communities
🛡️ fight other diseases
🔨 build a healthier future to achieve #HealthForAll
#Polio eradication takes commitment from:
👥vaccinators
👥activists
👥community mobilizers
👥teachers
👥nurses
👥imams
👥priests
👥community elders
👥local leaders
👥shopkeepers
👥parents
👥and countless others

We are stronger together.
Together, we can #EndPolio 💪
It's #WorldPolioDay

We have come so far in the fight against polio thanks to the leadership of countless #polio champions. A polio-free 🌎🌍🌏 is possible, but only with the continued commitment from all levels of government.

Let’s #EndPolio!

Media briefing on pandemic, preparedness and response and other developments at the #WHA77 with @DrTedros x.com/i/broadcasts/1…
"Today, the nations of the world made history at the World Health Assembly.

After two years of negotiations, they adopted a strong package of amendments to the International Health Regulations, based on the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The IHR was last updated 19 years ago. The amendments adopted today strengthen global preparedness, surveillance and response to public health emergencies, including pandemics"-@DrTedros #WHA77
"And although the #PandemicAccord has not yet been finalized, the Health Assembly has charted the way forward.

It has agreed to extend the mandate of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Body, to finalize negotiations on the Pandemic Agreement as soon as possible, and by next year’s World Health Assembly at the latest"-@DrTedros #WHA77

LIVE: @DrTedros' briefing on the health situation in #Gaza to the @UN Security Council twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
"Let me be clear from the outset that I fully understand the anger, grief and fear of the Israeli people following the horrific, barbaric and unjustifiable attacks by Hamas and other armed groups on Israeli civilians on the 7th of October.

The killing of 1,400 people, and injuries to more than 7,200 others, is bad enough. For the survivors and families of victims, the mental health consequences will endure for a long time to come.

WHO is gravely concerned for the health and well-being of Israeli hostages in Gaza, many of whom are older people, children and those with urgent medical needs"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros @UN "Two weeks ago, I spoke with families of hostages, and I will meet them in Geneva next week. I feel their heartache and fear"-@DrTedros

Media briefing on the health situation in Gaza and Israel, and other global health issues with @DrTedros twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
"We are running out of words to describe the horror unfolding in Gaza.

Since Hamas’s horrific attacks on Israel on the 7th of October, more than 10,000 people have been killed, including over 8,500 in Gaza and 1400 in Israel. In both Israel and Gaza, 70% of those killed are women and children"-@DrTedros
"More than 21,000 are injured and more than 1.4 million people in Gaza have been displaced.

The situation on the ground, in Gaza, is indescribable.

Hospitals crammed with the injured, lying in corridors;

Morgues overflowing;

Doctors performing surgery without anaesthesia;

Thousands of people seeking shelter from the bombardment;

Families crammed into overcrowded schools, desperate for food and water;

Toilets overflowing and the risk of disease outbreaks spreading;

And everywhere, fear, death, destruction, loss"-@DrTedros

After testing – unsuccessfully -- over 240 000 compounds for use in antimalarials, Chinese scientist Tu Youyou, head of the Project 523 to discover a cure for chloroquine-resistant malaria, turned to traditional Chinese medical literature for clues. There, she and her team found a reference to sweet wormwood to treat intermittent fevers. In 1971, Tu Youyou’s team isolated artemisinin, an active compound in sweet wormwood that was particularly effective in treating malaria. Artemisinin is now recommended by the World Health Organization as the first and second line of treatment for malaria....
