#CCGLive: CCGS Cape Calvert and CCGS Cape Naden have evacuated 16 people from the container ship M/V #ZimKingston near Victoria, #BritishColumbia after a fire broke out in ten containers earlier today.

The fire remains a dynamic event and an Incident Command Post has been set up to manage the situation. Responders are mobilizing to both fight the fire and recover the containers that broke away from the ship on Friday.

An Emergency Zone has been set up for 1NM around the ship while fire fighting operations are underway. Currently there is no safety risk to people on shore, however the situation will continue to be monitored.

#CCGLive: Overnight the tug Seaspan Raven has cooled the hull of the M/V #ZimKingston by spraying the hull with cold water. Due to the nature of chemicals onboard the container ship, applying water directly to the fire is not an option.

The #EmergencyZone around the ship has been increased to 2 NM. The Atlantic Raven has replaced the CCGS Captain Goddard M.S.M. and CCGS Cape Calvert is also monitoring.

#CCGLive: Active fire fighting is underway at the M/V #ZimKingston and we are seeing a reduction in fire and smoke. Gale force winds are predicted for the area. Teams will be monitoring air quality both on the water and on shore.

All fires produce toxic substances. Incident Command has detailed information on the chemicals that were on fire and are now smoldering in the containers onboard the #ZimKingston.

Smoke coming from the vessel is being tracked from air quality monitoring stations around the Greater Victoria area and local health authorities are being provided with those results.

The fire on the #ZimKingston has been stabilized. Depending on weather tomorrow, hazardous materials firefighters will board the ship to fight any remaining fires and ensure the fire is out.

Emergency tow vessels, tugs and CCG monitor the ship overnight to ensure the five crew members on the ship are safe, and that the ship remains secured. Further updates will be provided tomorrow.
