The @Cardinals’ promotion of Oliver Marmol was expected from the minute they had fired Mike Shildt.
That says a lot about Bill DeWitt Jr., John Mozeliak & Michael Girsch.
They are handing over the keys to one of America’s premier franchises to a young, Dominican American
History shows that Latinos & Blacks usually have to start their managerial careers at losing organizations not ready to win or past their winning windows. Alex Cora was a rare example. Now Marmol is another one.
By promoting Marmol, the #Cardinals are making franchise history.
He’s an example of what every organization committed to diversity should do. Find talented folks, let them work their way up, groom them, nurture them, test them and let them find their ceiling. Marmol is young, and that is a good thing. He’s bilingual, bright, hungry, HUMBLE!
He’s going to treat his players and his bosses with respect. He is going to grow with a roster ready to win and a front office that will help him. He is a product of the #STLCards .
What the Cardinals are doing is what Latino coaches have wanted from their organizations.
I spoke to many Latinos in front offices recently to ask if the Mets called them. Several told me they had no chance because they believed Sandy Alderson’s track record shows he doesn’t hire or seriously consider Latinos for those positions. The Cubs aren’t much better. Sadly!
Every Latino managerial prospect I spoke with thought Marmol would get the #STLCards job. That’s a testament to Marmol’s talent and potential and to how Latino coaches view Mozeliak & DeWitt Jr.
I believed it too because Mozeliak’s front office hires show his open mind.
#HispanicHeritageMonth was nice, but I’d rather take less theater and more substance like what Bill DeWitt Jr., John Mozeliak & Michael Girsch are showing with Marmol, just as they did when they promoted the talented Moises Rodriguez to assistant GM. #STLFly#STLCards
Felicidades, Cardinals fans, your organization gets it. They could have found many excuses not to give a young Latino bench coach this chance. Instead, they found reasons to promote him. Marmol, after all, is a product of their system. Today is a great day for Latinos everywhere!

(Thread) Every Sept. 13, there comes a time when I want to cry, want to shake somebody. On this day in 1985, I was excited about attending my first high school football game. Lynwood vs. Compton. I was only 13.
It was Friday 13th. My dad got off work & asked me to go with him.
2/ We needed to finish registering players for our soccer team ahead of that Saturday's game. I was a speedy forward. We drove to the soccer league's offices in L.A. The league president forgot the keys, so all the coaches waited outside & chatted. I waited in the truck.
3/ Some coaches decided to have a conversation right by the truck near the passenger window, so I got out and went to sit near my dad. I sat on the back bumper of the truck. Minutes later, I heard a loud collision. I wondered why a car was coming at me in slow motion.
