3 Militant minimalism principles to abandon so you can explore minimalism without negativity 💫
A thread
Minimalists get a bad rep because of the more militant minimalists with millions of followers. Big minimalism leaders often use shame and judgment to promote their ideas.
No thanks.
Here are 3 militant minimalism principles you can abandon so that you actually benefit from minimalism, and eventually find abundance through the lifestyle. 👇
1️⃣ Minimalists shouldn’t own anything
People exploring minimalism are often shamed for owning things or having collections of items.
Minimalists, just like everyone, need to own things in order to function. And also, we may have collections because they bring us joy.
2️⃣ Minimalists shouldn’t shop
One minimalist recently said something along the lines of, “If you shopped and bought something, you failed.”
(Okay, it wasn’t that harsh, but there was a thick coat of judgment suffocating their message.)
Here’s the thing: minimalists DO shop. And we may even enjoy it. Doing so doesn’t make anyone less of a minimalist.
In fact, some minimalists may shop a lot, because they’re trying to curate the perfect things that work for them.
3️⃣ Minimalists shouldn’t have a luxurious budget
Quite often, minimalists are pegged with the idea that we prioritize saving our money over spending it on stuff we don’t need.
This is an ok idea, but we don’t need to strip out every source of enjoyment from our lives, either.
🚙 If you want to drive a nice car, and you can afford it, go for it.
🏝 If you want to go on a flashy vacation, and you can afford it, send me a postcard.
👜 If you want to feed your need to get a new designer purse each year, and you can afford it, donate your old one.
Minimalism looks different for everyone.
Explore minimalism principles in a way that works for you, and soon you’ll be able to gain the benefits of the lifestyle without judgment or guilt.

Unlike digital minimalism, where the goal is to minimize your time and experiences with technology in order to use technology as a tool, digital simplicity is the act of streamlining your technological workflows so that you can use technology as a tool with simple solutions.
