💡How to identify trustworthy information💡
At the beginning of an SEO career, it can be difficult to recognise trustworthy information.
How do you discern which articles are accessible vs an article that is overly simplified?
Finding trustworthy information. A thread🧵
As an SEO specialist, even a beginner, it is our duty to use accurate and correct information.
Explaining complex information in a way that is easy to understand to beginners differs from simplifying complex information such as avoiding part of the concepts.
For basic information about how Google works, rely on information provided by Google ➡️ Anything in developers.google.com/search/ is generally trustworthy.
Bonus: it is available in 19 languages
@googlesearchc
@googlesearchc For your first steps on how to do SEO tasks, e.g. a KW search, a competitor analysis, SEO audit, rely on blogs created by tools. @ahrefs created an extensive library of videos and written tutorials, @screamingfrog provides how to use the crawlers, the SEO Beginners Guide by @Moz
In the SEO industry, there are online journals that are commonly accepted as trustworthy sources. Our four favorites are @searchenginejournal, @searchengineland @sewatch @seroundtable
For a step by step learning path, we recommend learning.io a website created and curated by @aleyda where the articles and resources are free.
If you have a specific question about a subject, search within a website that is trustworthy.
Type for example:
[keyword you’re looking for] search engine journal
[keyword you’re looking for] google developer
An alternative way of searching for a specific question in a trustworthy site is using the ‘insite’ method.
For example:
in site:developers.google.com keyword search
In site: [trustworthy URL] [keyword you’re looking for]
An alternative method to find trustworthy information about a specific questions is to use the ‘commonly respected specialists’ method
For example for local SEO
[keyword you’re looking for] Claire Carlisle @clairecarlile
[keyword you’re looking for] Greg Gifford @GregGifford
@clairecarlile @GregGifford The caveat in the ‘commonly respected specialists’ method’ obviously is that you need to know if the expertise of the specialist is valued + it tends to bring only articles from people who are already famous.
Our advice: cross reference the name or the information.
Become a search engine, do your own E-A-T evaluation of people, brands & websites. Look for obvious red flags (tons of ads and frequent typos) Search the writer: How long have they done this? What do they specialize in? Do they have the authority to write on this subject matter?
Feel free to ask questions on Twitter and tag some of the specialists. Most SEOs are nice.
Obviously you need to be respectful and friendly too. Time is precious for everybody. ⏰💎 For example, say please and thank you.

Finally, keep in mind that SEO is highly subjective and contextual. A successful tactic on one site doesn't inherently mean it will work on another. Opinions are necessary and common, so don't be afraid to ask qualifying questions like Why, When, and Where.
