1/Adding to my thread from yesterday, the loss of social ties is our primary ongoing challenge with respect to disinformation.

Any other approaches that we might pursue depend on us addressing social division meaningfully. So for example, people talk about "education"...
2/And point to countries like Finland, which teaches kids about disinformation. But it is a very different country that has been dealing with Russian disinfo, well, forever. It is also much more culturally homogenous, and much smaller. Its social divisions are quite different.
3/Frankly, I have listened to MAGA people with masters degrees and PhD's explain in full cultish glory about the cabal. And I have heard people with bizarre political beliefs give very educated, nuanced treatises on complicated topics. "Education" isn't specifically the problem.
4/Instead, people have a bias that if they appear to be in an out-group and doing things that seem nonsensical, they must be "uneducated." What they are is subject to influence — as we all are. We must all understand that we are influenced by our own networks.
5/Sometimes people use the term "low-information voter." This also is inaccurate. No one today compared to 30 years ago can be considered to be "low-information." We are awash in information; the problem is that much of it is in service of influence campaigns.
6/This, once again, is a way of "othering" people who are in the out-group and who we wish weren't. People routinely use the internet to research vast, complex webs of facts to arrive at conclusions that are unsupported or that comport with social desires.
7/That brings us to "critical thinking" and how we just need to teach more of it, right? Evidence is mixed. The same drive to "dig deeper" and "do your own research" is weaponized by influence campaigns. "Critical thinking" can be used to support motivated social reasoning.
8/And of course there's always "intelligence"; the idea that some people are just stupid and that is what's causing them to take on absurd beliefs. There isn't a lot of evidence to support that, and indeed there is plenty of counterfactual evidence.
9/We are facing two distinct tasks, 1) halting the destruction of additional social ties, 2) rebuilding what's been lost in the extensive fire that's already occurred.

Again, putting out the fire won't salvage what's been burned. And we still must put out the fire.
10/If I manage to get one idea across, it's that healthy social connections are a baseline requirement and dependency for nearly all other remedies we may wish to pursue. And this problem is especially acute in the United States, even as other countries face similar challenges.
11/Because intelligent, high-information, educated people who employ critical thinking are every bit as susceptible to influence and cultish social configurations as anyone else.

Ergo, only curbing the formation of cultish networks is a solution.
Here's one piece that explores this, with links to research.

Democrats are trapped in a world of norms and labels, when the opposition, which includes Republicans, foreign adversaries, double agents, and spies, has abandoned every norm in favor of all-out war across multiple fields of battle: social, cultural, financial, political.
Two such double agents rhyme with cinema and mansion.
Sooo… mysterious. 👻 🎃 🛸 What could possibly be going on here? This dude is pulling a Cassandra Fairbanks but is in the Senate, basically. Image

1/Regarding the coordinated attack on the dollar being perpetrated by a swath of domestic and foreign actors, some argue “they cannot be successful, so why be concerned?”

January 6th wasn’t successful, but it was still incredibly damaging and costly…
2/…and we are still dealing with the fallout of that. Also, what “makes sense” and “what they think they’re doing” are two different things. I’m telling you, loudly, what they think they’re doing:

They think they are going to take down the dollar and replace it with crypto.
3/As with Jan6, it is the *attempt* that will be damaging, regardless of whether it is “successful.”

We also don’t know where the cult has allies in positions of power. Nancy MacLean went as far as to suggest a “fifth column” intent on taking down the gov’t, and that seems real.

Countries don’t function like households or small businesses. Inflation does not function the way popular imagination thinks it does. This talk offers good insights into why 99% of what’s thrown around as “obvious” is both facile and wrong.

Likewise, while taxing billionaires more is probably a good idea, it is a tangential problem to creating the public goods we actually need, and promotes the idea that all wealth is a zero-sum endeavor—which it is not.

In fact, that’s a pillar of Nazism and the alt-right.
When people on the center-left succumb to zero-sum ideas about wealth, they are subscribing to a hierarchical model of society, with winners and losers: the same model behind “replacement theory” and xenophobic fears about immigration.

Personally I’d really like to know more about Mo Brooks’ involvement in the decision to move Space Force to Huntsville, and whether that agreement was made in exchange for anything.
Because one week after January 6th, Brooks put out a press release touting his achievement.

brooks.house.gov/media-center/n…
And why was this so secret, Pentagon? Had to be kept quiet til January 13? Hm. Chris Miller + friends? 🤔

“I committed to the Pentagon to not comment on this good news for the Tennessee Valley and Alabama until after it had been made public by the U.S. Air Force later today”

1/Disinformation is the operational end of a process designed to break down society and radicalize it into cultish forms. This process leads people away from truth.

We can’t address this process by distributing truth; the cure for disinfo is not simply truth.
2/Instead, we need to counter the “lytic” process of breakdown with a different process that pulls people into common cause. That’s very hard to do but we know that just “distributing truth” won’t work. Truth is, rather, a goal we must arrive at.
3/This is why “Cambridge Analytica, but for truth” is so wrongheaded, and why the breakdown process is so diabolical.

We can’t fix society any easier than we can un-stir coffee, or un-burn a fire.

Fixing this requires different thinking than that which got us here.

Someone asked me for more background on the “Third Rome” situation and Bannon’s connection to it. Here are several articles that can give more background. It’s a big part of Bannon’s pal Dugin’s philosophy.

This piece in the “National Interest” (a US right wing publication) outlines more of the Greek/Russia Orthodox alignment.

And in this interview I did with @HeidiCuda back in March, I explain how US religious activists connected with Russian counterparts and began to see Russia as a bulwark of “western values.”
