absolutely incredible sub-plot in the VA gov race. lady in the latest Youngkin ad *told WaPo* that her son was so triggered by a Toni Morrison book that he had night terrors and she tried to get the school to ban it
"yes Mr. National Reporter, my son can't handle Beloved. it was his first book since Goodnight Moon. yes this is on the record"
reminder that despite conservatives' recent posturing and #rebrand nobody is more easily triggered, nobody demands more safe spaces, and nobody is more hostile to free speech and free inquiry
and like, let's be real here. white, conservative, Republican operative family from Virginia. did they really object to violence *as such* in Toni Morrison? or was it something else
the "too scared to read Toni Morrison" guy's marriage got written up in the NYT lol (h/t @tyler_bellstrom) nytimes.com/2020/12/18/sty…

the Dem child care bill would *deliberately* aim an economic cruise missile at middle and upper-middle class parents for the next two consecutive elections peoplespolicyproject.org/2021/10/20/dem…
good news though. I recently commissioned a poll on whether it's good for families making 100.01% of median income should see their child care bill increase by 13 grand next year, and 57 percent of Americans said "what? can you repeat the question"

Menendez is comically corrupt even by American standards and the party could have ditched him years ago
what happened was Menendez took $600,000 in bribes to help a crooked doctor defraud Medicare. he almost got convicted too, which the Supreme Court has made near impossible cnn.com/2017/11/16/pol…

realizing that the 30 year mortgage is basically middle class rent control unlocked a lot of things in my thinking
yes, most Americans don't know that before the New Deal you couldn't get a 30-year fixed because it's financially nuts!
never knew this was such a popular topic lol

so France is pissed because it got treated like the second-rank power it is and is having trouble coming to terms with that? nytimes.com/2021/09/22/opi…
it's not fun to be pushed around, but my advice to France is to embrace it. being a great power is stupid and horrible! you end up pissing money away on the military and routinely get bogged down in unwinnable wars
one reason the Nordics are great imo is they're just small countries who can't afford to go on madcap imperialist crusades, so they mainly focus on tending their own little garden
