Shout out to First Ward Action Council for giving the extremely low-income tenants currently occupying the properties purchased for this project (touted by @MayorRichDavid as one that will “create” affordable housing opportunities” until this Friday to move out or be removed. 1/
I spoke with 1 of 6 still residing at one of these homes this morning. “We can’t find anything. Everyone just wants to rent to students.” They’d been promised an apartment visit last week but the landlord took their application, including the required fee, & never followed up. 2/
We cannot keep allowing elected officials to wax eloquent pretending to care about our most vulnerable neighbors without implementing policies within the private market or prioritizing funding allocations that would actually impact change. 3/
This warm fall weather will not last much longer. Even w/out shelter mandates for unhoused folks, shelters are at capacity & BCDSS runs out of hotel beds daily. Code Blue is looming & the City/County have no plan for where to put human beings when temps drop to deadly levels. 4/
Absolutely none of this is acceptable. Those of us doing the work will continue doing what we can. But honestly #Binghamton and #Broome - we need y’all to step up. Your neighbors need y’all to step up. It doesn’t have to be this way. 5.
