If you think that the 🇫🇷🇺🇸 diplomatic tensions over AUKUS are only a bilateral matter over the loss of a submarine contract, then you’re mistaken.
The AUKUS crisis is actually revealing of a larger trend in the transatlantic relationship, with Washington increasingly focusing on its competition with China sometimes at the risk of overlooking Europe's role and interests.
This situation is not in the interest of Europe nor of the United States. Europeans have failed to reckon with this reality and to take bold steps to better protect their interests.
By marginalizing Europe in its Indo-Pacific strategy, the Biden administration risks losing a key partner in the broader competition with Beijing. The EU has a lot to offer from maritime security to connectivity, tech or environmental protection.
Against this backdrop, the ongoing 🇫🇷🇺🇸 consultations should be seen as an opportunity to revamp the transatlantic relationship.
And if you paid attention, the first joint statement between President Macron and President Biden was not only about deepening 🇫🇷🇺🇸 cooperation but also about rebalancing the transatlantic partnership.
