Some reflections on the #CisWithTheT hashtag that’s been trending for a few hours.
If you’re one of those people who isn’t very online, or is not familiar with LGBTQ issues, and you don’t know what to think, have a look down that topic and see if you notice anything. 1/4
At the start of the day, it was overwhelmingly cis women, including many survivors of sexual violence, saying, “We love and support trans women, you are absolutely entitled to be in women’s spaces, and you are not a threat to our rights or safety by virtue of being trans.” 2/4
Then, the transphobes got hold of it and started shouting about genitals, painting trans women as predators and trying to organise pile-ons to OTHER CIS WOMEN who spoke out in support of the trans community. 3/4
So ask yourself, if you don’t know what to think, which of these positions seems more reasonable, more inclusive, more considerate of the safety of ALL women. And which just seems like it’s promoting hatred and division?
Brief addendum: I initially tweeted #CisWithTheT to demonstrate (amid allegations of ‘silencing women’) that the majority of women support trans rights. This was borne out, I think, by the contributions to the thread.
In response, lots of transphobes tried to, er…silence women.
