Habeas corpus.

Sounds like esoteric latin crap. But is the foundation of a republic. Your gormint can't just imprison you on a whim.

Never existed in Kashmir, NE. Now gone in the rest of India too.

With habeas corpus practically dead, Republic Day is just a military parade.
Yup. Habeas corpus has been systematically hacked away at for years. Shah Faesal, #bhimakoregaon activists, Umar Khalid, many others.

This Aryan case is to tell people, you don't even have to be an activist to lose your right to habeas corpus.

What's the over/under on when we will have a case when Modi imprisons a high profile American citizen for saying mean things about sanghis, being charged with espionage, like they do in North Korea or Iran?

I think that's when @nytimes @washingtonpost etc will pay attention.
I don't know why people are LOLing at this. A judge in a democratic republic should find the whole thing disgusting without saying "this might be okay in U.P."

No, your honor, it should not be okay in U.P. either. Don't U.P. people have rights?

This. So much this. And I think it's less to do with the alliance and more to do with who Uddhav is and wants to do, now that he suddenly has no elections to win or elders to obey or cousins to keep at bay.

It is not a grassroots change. It is a rare positive top-down one.
However, it is also, in a strange sense, a return to the Sena's early roots. Before Bal T went full saffron in the late 80s. In the 60s & 70s, Sena was like any other son-of-soil regionalist movement common all over the modern world, not really connected to Hindutva.
There were these two uncles near my place growing up. Brothers, one a proud sainik, the other a proud sanghi. People would be like, oh, bjp-sena, same diff. But no, both had distinctly different world views, even if temporarily aligned cos of Bal T's whims.

Sanghis playing such a weird double game. In arms "wow wow, US arms are game changers".

But also siccing online trolls on US celebs like it Rihanna, Martina, POTUS, and of course, Vice-President Harris (whom sanghi WhatsApp insists on hating for no justifiable reason).
Like my state dept friend was telling me, current Indian foreign-defense establishment has been pretty much purged of diplomats who think of India's national interest. It's all about Modi and Sangh agenda now. India as a whole may suffer. But Modi must look good on WhatsApp.
Which, he said, is such a bonus for other diplomats cos now they know all they need to do is throw out some bone that makes Modi look good in India this week. And Indian diplomats will surrender everything else.

Someone must have lied to him that Alec Baldwin is going to prison to distract him from something else. Literally no one is even thinking of charging Baldwin for the accident.

How we survived 4 years as a species with him in the top job, I'll never understand. Image
Imagine the utter moral hollowness of the "evangelical christian right" that continues to support the Trumps who are selling t-shirts like this to make money from someone dying from a gun accident. I don't see Jesus buying one of these. Image
Apparently the latest trumpworld obsession is to get Alec Baldwin charged & sent to jail because
a. he played Trump on SNL
b. he happened to be holding a prop gun in a freak accident that took a life randomly, without any fault of his, in front of lots of witnesses.

The only reason Twitter, Facebook tag false claims or ban politicians in the US is

A. those in US power, constitutionally and institutionally, can't take legal action against them.

B. they get pressured & squeezed by stakeholders and media.

In India, neither is the case.
The US media is far from perfect, but it is old school, investigative, hard nosed journalism from the "mainstream" media that exposes sordid tech details, causing public outcry, leading to hearings and changes and investigations. From Standard Oil to Facebook, muckrakers do it.
Muckrakers (remember, it's a positive term, not an insult) are the reason there are what restraints there are on US capitalism. Ida Tarbell types spawned a school of journalism that didn't really exist till then. NYT, WaPo, NYer, etc continue that.

Wholeheartedly endorse this thread. I've brought all my leather jackets only from Dharavi for almost 20 years now. Tailormade leather jackets for eye poppingly low prices, great quality & craftsmanship, and very reliable about being ready on time.
Imagine a genuine leather or sheepskin jacket handmade tailormade made for you in a couple of days for about US $100! All of it going in the pockets of a small business, not one of those Big Retail or ecomm vultures.
And FFS, don't bargain. Their prices are already very reasonable.

Nailed it!

Cos no one, NO ONE, is banning or attacking vegetarianism at all. Unless you're a snow flake "deeply offended" by social media opinions.

It's the meat eaters/sellers being beaten up, jailed, lynched.

Has any vegetarian ever been arrested for vegetarianism?
Sanghis will seriously argue that some people on social media ridiculing "veg biryani" or some friends trying to peer pressure vegetarians into trying meat is as bad as lynching, jailing people over food choices and opinions.
Noting aggregate trends isn't a generalization. No one has said ALL or even MOST vegetarians are violent.

But it's a simple fact that the only violence inflicted over food choices in India is from vegetarians on meat eaters, and not the opposite.
