instead accepting, uncritically, the claims of republican operatives in northern virginia, maybe our intrepid reporter could do a little reporting and find out what is actually being taught as part of the state's history curricula.
course guides for most state school districts are readily available online. most of them look like this. here's virginia beach city public schools standards for US history to 1865.
naturally, you'd have to actually speak with educators about what is going on in the classrooms themselves. and because schools vary, you'd probably want to do this at multiple sites throughout the state.
or, again, you could rely on hysterical anecdotes from republican party operatives

so we are watching THE SUM OF ALL FEARS because it was in this jack ryan box set i own and ben affleck isn’t even bad it’s just that the character does not work as a young man
the whole point of jack ryan is that he is a middle-aged fantasy. he should be in his mid-thirties at the youngest, well established with his career and family.
harrison ford was so good in part because he could sell with total sincerity the idea that ryan would rather be anywhere doing anything other than being in the thick of the action
the effects in this movie are incredible, and not just the creature effects. the scene of macreedy and co. exploring the wrecked spaceship is a great combination of built sets, matte painting, and location shots.
My column today is on Manchin (again) and specifically the opposition to freeing Americans from market dependence. Shoutout to @rortybomb for his terrific book. nytimes.com/2021/10/19/opi…
If you listen to @ezraklein's show, you might have noticed that I'm the host today. Ezra is on leave, and I took the helm this week while he's away. My first interview was with @woodyholtonusc and it was a terrific conversation. I hope you listen. nytimes.com/2021/10/19/opi…
and yes i have watched the summoning salt video as well as the videos of blindfolded runs
i am sure i am not the only person who has had to explain to his partner that he is not actually playing the game but watching other people play the game and beat it very quickly
Take this paragraph, which I read as dismissive. “Of course the city of Virginia Beach voted this down.” Except, VB — the largest single city in Virginia — is a vital swing area in the state, nearly evenly divided between Republican and Democratic voters, with lots of indies.
far from an “of course,” if the Virginia Beach school board is voting down a CRT resolution, that actually says something important about its potency as an election issue.
the one thing i don’t get is why the authorities haven’t just closed crystal lake to the public. by jason takes manhattan, dozens of teens have died at the lake and in the surrounding area. why not close it to the public? or better yet, fill it in with concrete.
“local activists try to shut down crystal lake but authorities refuse to because it is too profitable thus facilitating jason’s return” is actually a pretty good premise for a reboot
