Ok I am trying to rewatch The Departed, ostensibly to disabuse myself of the notion that this movie is extremely overrated. 2 min in and Gimme Shelter is underscoring Nicholson chewing scenery idk folks
It’s like Goodfellas’ Bildungsroman, but nowhere near as good!
So many great (or reputed to be great) actors, not exactly that the dialogue is bad, it’s just…tryhard? And also leans way the fuck into the racism in a way that feels pro forma
Ray Winston is the first person whose performance I bought
For the record, men, women do not drink cranberry juice to help with our periods. We drink it for UTIs.
Just no. Also why is Marky Mark wearing this elaborate shoulder holster when his job seems to be an office/managerial one? Like…he can put it on when/if he needs to go on the streets.
Have gone from thinking this movie is overrated to thinking it is just very mediocre
🤷🏻♀️
God the wayward cop and bad shrink falling in love is such a terrible trope
Everybody can stop telling me to watch Internal Affairs instead, got it, thanks!
Nicholson’s performance is truly odd, and his accent is all over the map.
If this were just a tad less pretentious, it would tip into The lad of Good Bad, like Point Break
OF COURSE the twisted cop has an ED problem. The shrink GF should just tell him he needs some cranberry juice.
Oh god the undercover cop has to see the same shrink? “Let’s talk about you, how do you feel. “How do I feel?!???” Montage of killing ensues.
What is this dialog? Downgrading this movie from mediocre to hackneyed.
Marky Mark has not attended the latest employee motivation classes.
Martin Sheen deserves better than these lines.
MICROPROCESSORS “I don’t know what they are…who gives a fuck.”
The pacing in this movie is so odd. Baldwin just delivered a line so fast it’s as if he’d sorted a mountain of coke.
The lady shrink is now going to fall in love with both these mooks. I guess.
Well I guess I should have seen the “no ticky, no laundry” dialog about the Chinese coming
Martin and Martin go randomly tell the Nicholson monster that they’re going to get him? Just like in Heat.
Is this Witches of Eastwick?
The ED subplot is so unnecessary and so…male.
I feel like both the cops and the mobsters of Boston would get more done without all this macho bullshit
Dropkick Murphys are the best thing so far
Movie gets better once Nicholson is dead.
God, i was going to say the last 20 minutes were good. Then this ridiculous final frames.
tl;dr this movie is extremely overrated. Not as bad as The Irishman, but Pan’s Labyrinth and even The Queen were robbed.

Yeah...two doors for 4,500 people, in an area rocked by fires and earthquakes. Seems smart!

The thing about generational mores and power struggles is everybody, should they live long enough, gets to experience both sides. The Boomers made "never trust anyone over 30" famous. And loved astrology. And tuned in and dropped out and protested and hitchhiked and...
Gen X mocked and confronted our elders too, we just never had any broad cultural power. So wryly watching Gen Z and millennials fight for dominance is perfect for us.
If you won't vote for a development with 1/4th of units set aside for affordable housing to be built on a parking lot near transit, just stop claiming you're for more density.
