i havent slept much in the past 24 hours, so if im a little self indulgent forgive me. it's just, i know i could make a whole lot more money & clout engaging in flippant bigotry, cruelty, or fearmongering. i know i could get big punching down.
today i chose not to. i chose to tell stories that haven't been, but need to be told. i have not seen another piece that addresses evangelical child abuse as a whole. nor such testimonies. so take a minute to read it, if you feel able. theswordandthesandwich.substack.com/p/ministry-of-…
this country does so wrong by its children.
A few notes that I wasn't able to include in the piece but feel like I should say: 1. So many of these authors talk about "breaking the child's will, but not his spirit" through pain. They seem so certain the lines are clear. But how could they know? How could they?
2. So many people wrote about what they did to avoid abuse: stuff themselves into quiet little boxes of "cheerful, immediate obedience." But many had large families. And had siblings who couldn't or wouldn't be silent.
Being forced to witness abuse is abuse.
3. Also, if what happened to you as a kid harmed you, if you still think about it sometimes, you are entitled to consider and mourn it & what might have been. Even if it wasn't "that bad." There is no contest, and comparisons ill serve you. Your pain is yours. It is not shameful.

what a weird day to release one of the most meaningful pieces ive ever worked on in my life
Anyway, it's here. This is part 2 of my series on evangelical corporal punishment. This piece examines the impacts of beatings on adult romantic relationships and sexualities. It is a complex subject, and I did my best to treat it with due care. theswordandthesandwich.substack.com/p/ministry-of-…
I am immensely grateful to the many people who shared their childhood experiences with me. I've consumed ~15 books for this series thus far, and far more testimonies from those whose lives were shaped by these doctrines. Irrevocably, and with great harm. theswordandthesandwich.substack.com/p/ministry-of-…
to honor my fascination with nicolas cage and also halloween, im watching The Vampire's Kiss, an absolutely bananas movie whose bananasness is dictated by cage's extremely deliberate and baffling choices as an actor
