The attempt to divert blame for climate inaction onto China and Russia is perhaps history's most cynical and destructive provocation.

Under the Common But Differentiated Responsibility framework, a critical principle in international climate agreements, wealthy states have an obligation to do more than poor ones — reflecting their higher capacities and their historic contributions to climate change.

Yet across the board, China is doing far more to address climate change and environmental breakdown than the US — indeed, far more than any other nation. Its achievements have been lauded around the world, including by the United Nations.

The US military — currently receiving trillions of dollars in injections for equipment to prod China with — is the world's biggest institutional polluter. It is also the final guarantor of the right of US companies to wreck the environment with impunity.

The historical record is clear: The US overthrows governments, starves peoples with vicious unilateral sanctions, and wages wars to protect the ability of its corporations to accumulate profit in the world's poorer nations.

It should be clear to anyone paying attention that Biden's diversion of blame, this grotesque deceit, serves two grizzly ends: to continue polluting and to ramp up aggression against China, the only major nation taking the green transition seriously.

As hundreds of millions of lives are put at risk in the coming decades because of climate change, the effect of Biden's policies is nothing less than genocidal. Do not fall for the deceit.
