Republican politicians are criticizing President Joe Biden's administration for reportedly considering making $450,000 payments to immigrant families.
chron.com/politics/artic…
The @WSJ reported Thursday that the U.S. Departments of Justice, Homeland Security, and Health and Human Services are considering offering approximately $450,000 to each person separated from their family after crossing the country's southern border.
chron.com/politics/artic…
Critics of the payments have called the potential disbursements "insane," but is the proposal as unusual as some claim?
chron.com/politics/artic…
Geoffrey Hoffman, director of the @UHouston's immigration clinic, says the $450,000 figure is likely far lower than it should be.
chron.com/politics/artic…
"A proposed monetary settlement is not atypical in federal court litigation where rights have been violated," Hoffman says.

"It would be appropriate in these horrific cases of family separation."
Approximately 5,500 children were separated from their parents under Trump's immigration policy.

Trump attorney general Jeff Sessions introduced the administration's "zero-tolerance" immigration initiative in April of 2018.
In June of that year, Trump signed an executive order calling for the end of family separation at the border, but "zero tolerance" remained standing policy until its official annulment by the Justice Department in January 2021.
An estimated 1,000 families have yet to be reunited after their parents were deported to their home country.

Do you think each person separated from their family after crossing the country's southern border should receive $450,000?

Is Houston going to have to say goodbye to @TeamCJCorrea?
chron.com/sports/astros/…
When the Astros lost the 2019 World Series, their top free agent-to-be begrudgingly stood in front of the media "as an affiliate of myself."

Two months later, Gerrit Cole was $324 million richer and an affiliate of the New York Yankees.

@Astros star Carlos Correa faced a similar situation after Tuesday night's Game 6 loss to the @Braves.

But the free agent shortstop handled it by speaking honestly with the media, while at the same time thanking his teammates and the city of Houston.
