My tolerance for congressional drama is pretty high, but it's been an unusually exasperating day - and it didn't have to be. (1/7)
The hope was that Dems might be able to pass both the Senate's bipartisan infrastructure bill (#BIF) and the Build Back Better (#BBB) package today. A triumph for everyone! But... (2/7)
A small group of moderates - just big enough to dictate the outcome - said they wouldn't allow a vote on the White House's domestic agenda without a CBO score. (3/7)
Since the bill is poised to change anyway in the Senate, this was foolish and unnecessary. For reasons that remain deeply odd, the moderates said they didn't care. (4/7)
Fine, Pelosi said, we'll pass the infrastructure bill instead. No, progressives said, fearing that the moderates would screw them over and kill the BBB package once the BIF cleared the Hill. (5/7)
And so, at least as of this minute, House Dems agree on the substance of both big bills, but neither will pass today - although today isn't over, things could still happen? - and members are scheduled to be out next week. (6/7)
What's more, even if both pass the House eventually, Manchin and Sinema will continue to demand regressive changes to the BBB package in the Senate, putting the entire initiative in jeopardy #headdesk (7/7)
