I must thank Rashtrotthana Sahitya, Bangalore for their Bharata-Bharati Series.

About 500 Books inKannada, now 200 In English. Each is about one historical person. Kings, Writers, Leaders, Thinkers, Scientists from ancient India to today.

@sankrant @Sai_swaroopa
When I was a kid, it was only in Kannada and was still evolving. Just as Amara Chitra Katha did, Bharata-Bharati Series played a very big role in shaping my civilizational sensitivity.

+
There is an entirely alternative history out here.

This series was shaped by Dr. LS Sheshagiri Rao, a stalwart in Kannada-English writing in Karnataka. Each book was written by a prominent writer in Kannada. Hence, the quality was outstanding.

+
Just ensuring that this Bharata-Bharati Series is there in school library itself is a good way of compensating for all NCERT, Left, Secular distortions - kind of an antidote.

If one studies all this before 12th, even if they join Asoka University damage will be less.

+
Rashtrotthana Schools that way are blessed because they will have access to these books right from the beginning and the teachers are ready to use them in their curriculum.

Now, that they are available in English, other schools should begin to use them.

+
The spectrum of people covered in these books is fascinating. I have never read an entire book on the Kalinga book “Kharavela” - even the Wiki page on him is sketchy but Bharata-Bharati has a book on him.

Aryabhata, Varahamihira are all covered. Every State, Every Region.

+
Its also a tribute to Kannada Culture - how nationalistic we have been at all times.

Conceived for a Kannada audience, the Series perfectly builds the same Civilizational Consciousness for all equally & in the right measure.

Its a treasure that we have but are not utilising.

Felt like writing about “How I know about Adi Shankara” after reading some threads.

For a person belonging to a family of Advaita Tradition, this is a bit of a non-issue, yet it is important to represent my journey of knowing Adi Shankara.

+
Given the background, an Adi Shankara photograph was always there at home. Prominently in the living room, centrally in the Pooja Room.

Bookmarks were Adishankara card photographs. The “Prasanna-Vadana” of Bhagavatpada with his 4 Shishya-s was a timeless reality at home.

+
Not just that, at every single relative of mine, had a similar photograph/picture configuration in their houses. So, you grew up seeing those photographs all the while.

Plus Shlokas composed by Adi Shankara, Shlokas on Adi Shankara all the time at home.

I am not very sure if we, or even the venerable Nariman, understand the enormity of the claim made here.

If Modern Law is best expressed in English, this can mean the following for Indians.

- We have a Law-System that is not aligned with our Intellectual Thought and Culture.

+
- If we do bring that to our languages, then it does not represent the original perspective in purity. That results in corruption of the original.

- The more we express it in our languages, the more we bring our own concepts

+
- Hence we may end up extending our civilization into the Modern world, which eliminates the hegemony of the Elite (I can imagine this when I read something in Kannada)

The other way of looking at it
- Since, engage more with English - shed your native thought aka Conversion

This is #Navaratri / #Dasara.

For long & even today, Dasara is synonymous with #Mysore. It is also the nADa-habba - the State Festival of Karnataka.

Dasara as the State Festival are a contribution of the #Wodeyar dynasty.

“May they prosper forever” - the Yadukula Santana.

+
Vijayadashami as a Festival has a very long history. Many classical texts trace it back to Mahabharata, although the Vyasa Bharata does not say anything. It, of course, goes back to Ramayana.

In the Classical era & subsequently in the preBritish references are galore.

+
The Vijayanagar Kings made Vijayadashami - Dasara a very big event, which is recorded by many travellers.

But its the Wodeyars alone who carried this festival to the Modern times. They transformed a cultural/religious event into a State/Civilizational Festival.

Its important to celebrate @vikramsampath

Multiple achievements - all important to our Civilization.

1. Mainstreaming of Shri. Savarkar

This alone puts Vikram Sampath in very big league. The 90s saw enormous vilification of Savarkar by the left, centre and their combo-s.

+
The JNU, The Hindu, The Front Line produced tonnes of selective outrage around Savarkar. AG Noorani was the the forefront. The possible emergence of BJP/RSS had all of them in high alert. This became an instrument of determining if one got a position in academics.

+
Calmly, confidently Vikram Sampath has ensured that Savarkar is mainstreamed. The 2014+ environment definitely an enabler. But it is his personal conviction, the rigour, faith in the discipline that made the difference.

We now have a path to elevate other personalities.

The Question is how do we read our Itihasa-Puranas? The two are not exactly the same. They are used together because they are a Twin. There are overlaps and parameters ought to be different.

For the purpose of this thread, we will talk about them together.

+
1. Are they Histories? Absolutely No. Reading them as History results in 2 problems.

A. Severely reduce the overall Scope of Itihasa-Puranas. We will cheat ourselves by losing the primary purpose they have served.

B. Will result in an endless loop iof Proof/Evidence search.

+
2. In which case, dont have have anything to offer in the dimension of History?

They do. Just that it requires a different kind of discipline which we have not fully evolved. The Historical information in the Itihasa-Puranas have suffered 3 kinds of assault.

Hearty Congratulations to Swarajya. The importance of Swarajya can never be understated.

The word, the magazine, the history.

+
I distinctly remember the time when there was buzz in the nation about the restarting of Swarajya, even before Shri. Jaggi joined. Bharateeya-s had gained enough clarity that we needed an exclusive magazine/media institution that served the civilization from within.

+
We, of course, had also gained enough confidence that there were enough readers and that there was a need to scale.

Kudo-s to the founders for seeing that opportunity and confidence in the society.
