1. Slouching.

- Slouching and allowing your body to fold in on itself makes you appear weak and unenergetic.

- It makes a terrible impression.

FIX:

- Straight posture will help you appear capable, confident, and energized.
2. Crossing Your Arms (Or Legs).

- Crossing your arms in any way makes you appear closed off or unwilling to negotiate.

- It makes you appear rude.

FIX:

- Relax your hands gently at your sides or on the desk/table in front of you.

- This shows that you are open.
3. Feet pointing away.

- Feet pointing towards the door or other direction apart from the person you are talking to indicate you are looking forward to leaving.

FIX:

- Make sure you are pointing your feet towards the person you are talking to.
4. Turning away.

- Turning away from the person you listen or take to indicates you are not interested in the conversation.

FIX:

- If you want to make a strong impression, move your body slightly to angle toward the person who is speaking.
5. Hiding your hands.

- Standing with your hands in your pockets sends a bad message.

- It can be interpreted as you having something to hide.

- Same applies when sitting at a desk and having your hands in your lap.

FIX:

- Ensure to keep your hands where they are visible.
6. Fidgeting.

- Playing with your hair, shuffling papers, or tapping your foot, Fidgeting is interpreted as under prepared, anxious, and dishonest.

FIX:

- Feel free to gesture when you talk to keep your hands busy.
7. Self-Soothing.

- Wrapping your ankles or legs around chair or table legs, clasping hands together makes you look weak and anxious.

FIX:

- Figure out what is causing that discomfort and address it to look more confident.
8. Checking your phone/clock.

- It conveys that you have more important things to do than the current conversation you are involved in.

FIX:

- Set your phone to vibrate and announce prior and leave to avoid such situations.
9. Eye contact.

- Avoiding eye contact makes you look untrustworthy.

- Looking too much makes you appear adversarial and intense.

FIX:

- Do not look for more than 10 seconds at a time.

- Break eye contact every few seconds, but come back to show you are still engaged.
