Goals — Why you need them, when to ignore them, & how to increase your likelihood of getting to the finish line.

I love talking about goals...

But I also love learning from Twitter's best thinkers.

@thedankoe just so happens to be fluent on the topic.

I dove deep through his treasure trove of tweets & hand-picked my favorite lessons.

But first, why goals?
1: Goals = Happiness

The truth is, goals make life hard.

They require discipline, work ethic, and a whole boatload of sacrifice.

Why in the world would you put yourself through that?
According to Dan, it's because the reward we get is unlike anything else.

With the right goal, we're gifted this unique combination of joy, accomplishment, and —most importantly— purpose.

That feeling alone is worth the price of admission.

2: Accountability

Life is filled with distractions.

A good goal keeps you focused on what matters most.

When you're out of alignment with your goals, your subconscious will constantly drive you back to them —helping you stay accountable & on track.

3: Bright Future

A goal without a Vision is like a car without gas.

Dan points out that if we want that "Bright Future" effect, we need to tether our goal to a greater vision for our life.

For example:

Your goal is to launch this business...

But your vision is to lead a life where you can wake up without an alarm clock or go on vacation when the whim strikes.

Goal + Vision = Bright Future effect
4: Attainable Progress

Big goals create motivation, but small goals keep you motivated.

Break that big inspiring goal down into more attainable micro-goals.

The quicker you see progress, the more likely you are to keep at it.

5: Find the "Lead Measures"

Once you have your goal, stop focusing on it.

Instead, identify the actions that are most likely to "lead" to the outcome you want. Those are your Lead Measures.

Focus on executing those consistently.

6: Leverage Habits & Routines

Once you know what needs to get done, how do you increase the likelihood that you'll actually do those things?

Dan notes that habits, routines —and I'll add, batching— help to decrease friction and amplify execution.

7: Prioritize to Progress

Stop trying to do it all every day.

Instead, pick the few tasks that are most likely to create the greatest impact.

Dan sticks with 3 big lever tasks and gets them out of the way first thing.
These are just a few gems on the topic of goals and achievement.

Do you have a Procrastination Protocol?

Here are 7 ways to bust the procrastination bubble that having nothing to do with “powering through it.”
A procrastination protocol is a series of pre-defined steps & strategies that you can turn to when facing a period of procrastination.

Here are the tactics I use listed in the order that I deploy them.
1 - Embrace the resistance

When we resist the feeling of resistance —we freeze it in place.

Instead, stop running from your procrastination and just embrace it. You’re procrastinating, so what.

Realize that this is a temporary state and you’ll be back in action in no time.

Actually, there is a secret to success…

But it has nothing to do with working harder, having better ideas, or knowing the right people.

If you want to make success inevitable, stop obsessing over what to work on & start looking at how you work.

🧵👇
Successful people work with intention.

Not only do they set goals, but they design their days to make incremental, consistent progress toward them.

To be effective executors, we must stop leaving work to chance & get serious about designing an execution framework of our own.
Here’s the cool thing…

An execution system is a force multiplier for everything that you do —a shot of adrenaline in the arm.

If you spend the time to build it once you’ll reap the benefits for the rest of your life.

So how do we do it?
