Covid Wk-In-Review

tl;dr
* The positive trends in the data continue
* And now kids are vax eligible!
* But vax locations are problematic
* Also, we appear to be plateauing
* What's in store for the Winter?

1/ Image
Since October just ended, let's look back at monthly trends.

* Avg daily cases dropped 73%, from 554 to 149
* Positivity dropped from 16.0% to 5.1%
* Deaths were up slightly to 194 (remember, this is a lagging indicator)
* New vax's dropped to record-lows

2/ Image
Here, you can see this year compared to last year.

At this time last year, cases were about 3x higher than they are now.

But the summer peak happened later this year, as did the fall drop. At this point last year, cases had already been rising for a month.

3/ Image
Our case rate has fallen consistently and dramatically over the past month and is down to 8.4 per 100k.

But it appears to be plateauing.

And that's a concern. It's still nearly 3x higher than we were at before delta hit this summer.

4/ Image
So the big question is this:

What will the winter look like?

5/ Image
Just 54% of the local population has been vax'd.

And while official numbers say that less than 16% have had covid, we know we missed cases bc of low testing. I estimate that around 43% were infected - and so have some immunity.

That's 97%, minus the overlap, so 85-90%?

6/
When we think about winter, then, there's a question of "waning" immunity.

Half of those who've been vax'd were vax'd by early April. That's six months ago, which is when the booster is recommended (for some).

7/
The good news about "waning" immunity is that, while we may have fewer antibodies over time, the ones we have now are better and stronger.

It's a question of quantity versus quality.

theatlantic.com/science/archiv…

8/
But those with weakened immune systems - either from age or underlying medical conditions - need the extra boost.

Same with those who have more risk of exposure because of work or living conditions.

9/
This is why it would be great if we knew how many booster shots were being given.

The more boosters, the less likely we'll see a huge surge in hospitalizations and deaths over the winter.

10/
But "natural" immunity from infection also "wanes." And so we still need to see those who had covid but who haven't beeen vax'd, get vax'd.

11/
The very good news is that kids can now get vax'd.

Finally.

But I don't understand the strategy here. We've had months to plan for this. And yet, per vaccines.gov, this is the map of where vaccine appointments are located.

Wtf, y'all?

Seriously, wtf?

12/ Image
I just booked an appointment for my youngest. We live near Crosstown. But the closest location is 7 miles away.

Seriously, wtf?

Just look at this map - and try to make an argument that they care at all about vaccinating Black kids and/or kids living in poverty.

13/ Image
Of course, this map represents all the places you can make appointments online for vaccines.

So maybe they think wealthy people are more likely to do that - and so maybe they are planning on offering walk-up events in low-income communities?

But, no, that's not happening.

14/
The only place in all of Shelby County where they are offering vaccines w/o an appointment is at the health department.

That's 9 miles from the families in Frayser who live near the school where I work.

But at least they are offering times after school now.

15/ Image
Bc the health dept vax site was initially only going to be open weekdays, 8:00am-4:30pm.

Since schools don't get out until either 3:15 or 4:15, kids would basically have to miss school to go get vax'd.

But then parents would have to take off work.

Also, transportation?

16/ Image
Anyway, we could do better.

And the fact that we aren't seems intentional at this point.

17/ Image
Speaking of could have done better, check out covid deaths in the US & UK compared to those in South Korea.

That's a lot of blood on our hands as Americans.

18/
And the situation in Europe right now makes me more concerned about the coming winter than I was before I saw these data.

It is essential that we vax up. We need to reach un-vax'd adults & kids, while also pushing as many boosters as possible.

19/
Let me end by celebrating @ministerdbrown, @mrsvjbrown, & the 12th anniversary of @LifeLineSuccess.

I've known them since the beginning. I trust them & vouch for their good work.

And I would encourage you to make a donation.

Today is Veterans Day, but it used to be called Armistice Day. And it was a mistake to change the name. We should celebrate peace, we should celebrate the end of war, not war itself.

Kurt Vonnegut, born on this day, would agree. Image
Vonnegut was himself a veteran. He dropped out of college to enlist & serve in WWII. Taken prisoner by the Germans, he survived the bombing of Dresden.

In Breakfast of Champions, he wrote about the name-change from Armistice Day to Veterans Day. It's worth reading today.
"When I was a boy...all the people of all the nations which had fought in the First World War were silent during the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour of Armistice Day, which was the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

tl;dr: Good News
* Cases continue to drop, down to 340/day
* Positivity rate, down to 9.3%
* Hospitalizations continue to drop
* Deaths, way up to 76
* Vax's remain low

1/
Here are avg daily cases by report date and test date. And what this says to me is that we finally caught up with the backlog (notice that the big discrepancy b/t the two a few wks back is gone). As a result, reported cases are now back to being accurate.

2/
In mid-Aug, cases were artificially low bc of the backlog. Then, as they caught up with the backlog, cases were artificially high.

But there's reason to believe that the 340 cases/day this week is accurate. It's the lowest since the wk of July 18.

Before we begin, please contribute to this fund to help Floridia Jackson pay for the care she needs.

Floridia has cared for so many of us over the years, but now she needs our help. So I ask that you be generous and give as you are able.

Before we start, a quick note: The health dept dashboard has not been updated since Thursday. Apparently, the site is having some problems.

Case numbers have been reported, but not positive tests, which makes positivity rate impossible to calculate.

tl;dr: Bad.
* Cases, +1207% over 5wks, from 27 to 349/day (37.2 per 100k)
* Positivity, from 2.4% to a record-high 16.9%+
* Infection rate, 1.32-1.46
* Hospitalizations rising quickly, +72% in 1wk, +142% in 2wks
* Deaths are up too

1/
Perspective.

We are a week away from surpassing our peak from last summer. And that's *with* more than 400k ppl vaccinated.

This is a complete disaster. And the worst part is that it was completely preventable. We have vaccines.

2/
Also, deaths are rising pretty quickly, so much so that they will likely surpass last summer in the next week.

And, again, almost all of these deaths were preventable. Just 3wks ago, we were avg'ing 0.1 death per day. As close to zero as you can get. Now we're up to 2.1/day.

tl;dr: Hold On Tight!
* Cases, +671% over 4wks, from 27 to 206/day (22.0 per 100k)
* Positivity, from 2.4% to 12.8%+
* Infection rate, 1.34
* Hospitalizations & Deaths on the rise

1/ Image
Just look at how daily cases have spiked over the past month. And notice that we've had 3 days straight over 200 cases.

For context, we've only had 1 day total over 200 since March. And the last time with 3 days straight over 200 was Feb6-8.

2/ Image
We were avg'ing just 22 new cases/day on June 30. Today, July 24, we're up to 206/day.

That's an astounding +836% increase.

tl;dr: Yikes!
* Cases, +51% over 1wk, +342% over 2wks, from 32 to 94 to 141/day
* Positivity, from 3.8% to 7.8% to 10.1%
* Infection rate, 1.46, highest since March 2020
* Hospitalizations, rising quickly
* Deaths, starting to rise

1/
Look at how sharply daily cases have spiked over the past two weeks, up to levels not seen since the first week of May.

We've now had 9 straight days with over 100 cases, well over 100 in fact.

2/
Here are daily cases just for July 2021...
