I've realized it's been a long Twitter silence, so I'll revive my feed a little bit. Want to share a few insights related to looking for a new job in this thread. #AcademicTwitter #jobs #industry
1. Having a work permit is a huge help and influences how often one gets invited for an interview
2. Having at least a couple of years' experience is a HUGE help in getting invited to an interview.
3. Having some professional network and getting advice and an internal reference makes job search an order of magnitude faster and more efficient.
4. Some numbers: it took me 100+ applications to land my first job after a PhD while not having a work permit. Having a permit and less than a year of experience, reduced it to less than 80 I was pregnant at the time, which made it harder, but wasn't a show-stopper.
5. Back then, the manager from my first job gave a good enough feedback to my soon-to-be manager so I was not only hired, but also the position was adjusted for me not being able to travel a lot, and I'm super greateful to both companies.
6. The previous point shows it but I'll highlight again. Relationships matter. Even if I'm fired I do my best to preserve the good relationships with managers, colleagues and other connections. Burning bridges doesn't help neither in short, nor in long term.
7. This time over, I applied to two companies, and the third one approached me. Went through a full interview cycle with all of them, learned a great deal and generally had good time while preparing and being interviewed. No comparison to "cold" job search, which is crazy.
8. I enjoyed my previous job and I wouldn't consider changing it, but I was wasn't scared of losing it (the restructuring was coming and I've considered such possibility, though I didn't think it would actually happen). In the end, I'm kind of happy I lost it 🤪
9. Why? Because the job search turned out surprisingly validating and I see more options for my career now, and I will make it a mental habit to check if it's time to look for something new before I actually have to.
