Don't waste $1,000's of dollars on a cohort based course.

Use these 13 tactics to get the most from your investment 🧵
1/ Find a buddy

Best version: sign up with a friend or partner for brainstorming & mutual accountability

Back up plan: review profiles and make fast friends with those that share common interests

Role models: @MrJacobEspi & @rolanddaher showed me how this is done
2/ Show up early

In my first CBC, a deep convo was always underway when I dialed in.

Yesterday I dialed in 15 mins early and got 10 solo minutes with @aaditsh and @brandonthezhang - their generosity in those 10 min alone were worth the full cost.

3/ Support the community

Positive sum: you win, I win

Ask yourself: is it really off brand to see be seen as a full-throated supporter of new voices?

Role model: @BernardoNFaro does this with every👋single👋tweet
4/ Curate a Twitter List

While most courses have Discord channels or WhatsApp lists, you can help people isolate your cohort easily with a Twitter List.

Bonus, anyone who didn't get in early will engage you.

Role model: @ThePupOfWallSt

Example: twitter.com/i/lists/145770…
5/ Share your notes

The convos are often fast & furious.

Sure you can go back to the recordings, but notes capturing those highlights are much higher leverage.

Share and feel the love.

Role model: @PatrickHerbert0 put on a masterclass during @GrowthTactics Summit last week
6/ Connect people

You're there to learn a new topic, so you don't feel you have much to share. I get that.

But you do know other people. Play matchmaker from your network. Or even better within the class.

Role model: @CarynTan29 made a 10 intros before class even started🤯
7/ Connect communities

Take @MavenHQ: there are the 100's of entrepreneurs, instructors, & alumni in the broader community. Find them.

Even better: Intro an adjacent community.

Role models: @therealjohntan exposed us @dickiebush's #ship30for30 & @DanesaGlez to #tweet100
8/ Ask & answer

Your time together is limited. But everyone raised their hand to be there.

Ask your questions - you'll be shocked how many people engage.

Answer others - hoarding does not work in these communities.

Instead, 1+1=3.

Need inspiration?
9/ Share cool resources

- Better Saas tool to manage twitter?
- Great podcast that's on topic?
- Inspirational quote?

Role model: @MurtazaBambot already getting us jumpstarted Day 1
10/ Shape the next cohort's experience

When they ask (or even if they don't) provide feedback to the instructor.

80% of the value is the on-going community.

And like all communities, it's the sum of what everyone puts into it.

Role Model:@JesseFriedland shaped discord for MM2
11/ Show up

Be present
Camera on
Use the chat
Test your tech setup
Make space in your day
Bring the energy and vibe

Role model: me (I hope, as it's a principle we hold dearly in our family)
12/ Seriously, show up. Live.

We all have commitments. But you made a big investment.

Don't miss the chance to ask questions, engage with others, shape the community.

You don't lack time, you lack prioritization.

If you can't? Watch YouTube.

Role model: @austinschless 100%🔥
13/ Show gratitude

Your instructors, classmates & community all took time from an infinite list of options to support you.

Appreciate them. Thank them. Support them back.

Roel model: @SahilBloom (showed me the power of "I appreciate YOU")

Wait, what?

Bloomberg: "Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said Monday that his agency will use about $1 billion from President Joe Biden’s public works legislation to remedy racial inequities in U.S. highway design..."

Why not $1B in education grants to minority students?
The big dig in Boston took 16 years and cost $24B.

So we're talking about maybe, maybe moving one major highway this decade. wbur.org/news/2012/07/1…
Average annual in-state tuition is 10K/year, so 40K/student for a 4-year degree.

Don't undermine a year of hard work.

Here are 13 tips to crush your next performance review🧵
Why take my advice?

✅I've personally reviewed more than 500 people

✅I built & ran the performance management system for 1000's more

✅I did this at Bridgewater, where we monitored individual performance 24/7/365
1/ Get in the right mindset

- This is a meeting that you need to embrace, not fear

- This is a process you can influence, not guarantee

- This is a negotiation, not a debate

Can a quirky hedge fund really make you a better parent?

Lessons I learned when I brought the principles of the world's largest hedge fund home 🧵
When people learn I worked at Bridgewater, without fail they ask:

Do you give & get feedback in every meeting?
And welcome debate, even from junior employees?

With real gratitude I can answer:

Yes. All true.

And it wasn't a distraction.

Building the system is the work.
Bridgewater started as a newsletter in Ray Dalio's 2-bedroom apartment.

It's now a $150B asset manager.

How'd he do it?

Systematic decision making based on rules and data.

The result?

The education system isn’t broken.

That's just your excuse.

Here’s how I know 🧵
The system is not bad, it's average.

Teachers face the impossible task of meeting all students where they are:

The math whiz.
The introvert.
The child with an IEP.
The front-row hand-raiser.

The result?

Despite tremendous effort, each child is underserved in some way.
Just read these quotes.

Sharp insights that all point to the same problem:

The one-size-fits-all system doesn’t fit my one-in-a-million child.
