Another thread on developments at COP with the usual caveat it’s my impressions of what is a vast, complex gathering #COP26#EdinUniCOP26 - and starting with the music of protest! 1/n
We need music faced with this hugely sobering report on the impacts on people of just two degrees of warming - and a Tuvalu Minister makes a dramatic gesture reflecting the desperation of small island states 2/n theguardian.com/environment/20… and theguardian.com/world/video/20…
A few things I spotted including Paul McCartney and others launching a campaign to eat less meat and the US meat industry (!) pledging to go net zero 6/n meatfreemondays.com and thehill.com/policy/energy-…
Tesco made a pledge their pension scheme would go net zero and Germany pledged to stop funding fossil fuels overseas 7/n businessgreen.com/news/4039952/t… and
Then comes the complicated topic of how near- or far!- we are from the 1.5 degree and 2 degree targets, following suggestions last week we might be on track for 1.8. I’ll share some links then give my view 12/n
The message from UNEP seems to be progress has been made, but not enough to get us below two degrees with any confidence and only with heroic assumptions do we get to 2.1 degrees, with action critical over the next decade 14/n
I think it’s clear we are right to be cautious about pledges for dates far away and that we’re unlikely to get a full strong deal limiting warming to 1.5 by Friday when COP26 is due to close 19/n
Also seems clear that the rank injustice of climate change, and the structural injustices of the world economy won’t be solved by COP- nor will enough money be made available for adaptation, loss and damage or protection of ecosystems 20/n
Also seems clear that current NDCs and 2030 pledges are utterly inadequate at the moment- we’re getting there with long-term pledges but as someone said, they only tell you that you are committing to stopping eating cake, not when and how much cake you will eat… 21/n
But I’d agree with others above and with @AkshatRathi that progress *is* being made, but I think we’re in a race - it’s the area under the emissions curve that matters ultimately 22/n
That race is to shut down coal ( and gas), decarbonise transport, help developing countries make the clean energy transition, get the finance system to fund climate friendly not destructive activities and end international funding of fossil fuel developments 23/n
We’re in a race to bring the nature crisis and climate crisis together, to develop breakthrough innovations in hydrogen, aviation, shipping, steel, concrete, farming and the food system 24/n
Second thread of the day on today at COP- it was a long day with lots of sessions and I can’t pretend to have absorbed all the details of the negotiations but I can hopefully give a flavour #COP26#EdinUniCOP26 1/n
Two threads today on a busy day at COP and you’ll have to excuse errrors and misunderstandings as it’s been a long day. First, general announcements and things that caught my eye, then a second thread on the negotiations #COP26#EdinUniCOP 1/n
The day started with an overnight publication of the first draft of the agreement from the U.K. presidency (more in a separate thread) and calls from the U.K. Prime Minister for more action 2/n bbc.co.uk/news/world-592… and businessgreen.com
Today was also transport theme day so there were a whole raft of coalitions and announcements made on zero carbon cars, HGVs and coalitions on sustainable aviation and shipping 3/n
So #COP26#EdinUniCOP26 continues with today’s themes being gender and innovation. I thought I’d tweet on things I noticed over the last 2 days, and more later on today’s developments 1/n
Yesterday’s theme was adaptation, loss and damage and there were *some* announcements and a recognition that prevention is better than loss and that nature and people are vital to climate action 2/n businessgreen.com/news/4039905/l… and bbc.co.uk/news/uk-592021…
But as I listened to indigenous leaders from the Amazon talk about ravages and loss happening to their lands, and the repeated calls from developed nations for more funding for adaptation and ‘ reparations’ (formally ‘loss and damage’)it was hard to feel much progress made 3/n
I thought I’d do another thread on things that caught my eye today as highlighted by @guardian COP26 and @BusinessGreen@James_BG Remember I’m not physically at COP yet,and I am only giving my impression as the announcements and projects continue to pour out #COP26#EdinUniCOP26
Today was finance day at COP- a lot was announced. I’m no finance expert but I do advise the University on what it means to invest our £500m endowment fund,c£700m treasury funds in a climate friendly and responsible way and have done for 8 yrs so hopefully have some insights 1/n
The U.K. chancellor made a speech (no questions and apparently young protesters not allowed!) setting out plans to make U.K. finance system net zero, including requiring net zero transition plans.Note this is mandatory to have plans but doesn’t require company by company zero 2/n
I’ve been trying to keep up with the huge flurry of #COP26 announcements and here is what I’ve spotted today ( in addition to all my other tweets today!) #EdinUniCOP26 …
I’ve not been at #COP26 physically yet but I have been watching, reading and reviewing so FWIW my take so far- make of it what you will #EdinUniCOP26
Firstly, it seems disappointing if not surprising that there are long queues- perhaps that will improve now the world leaders’ summit has finished and as the processes are tweaked. I do have some sympathy for the organisers given the complications introduced by COVID
What is less forgivable is lack of planning to ensure people with disabilities can easily access the venue including transport to and from it. That needs fixed right away
