Two threads today on a busy day at COP and you’ll have to excuse errrors and misunderstandings as it’s been a long day. First, general announcements and things that caught my eye, then a second thread on the negotiations #COP26 #EdinUniCOP 1/n
The day started with an overnight publication of the first draft of the agreement from the U.K. presidency (more in a separate thread) and calls from the U.K. Prime Minister for more action 2/n bbc.co.uk/news/world-592… and businessgreen.com
Today was also transport theme day so there were a whole raft of coalitions and announcements made on zero carbon cars, HGVs and coalitions on sustainable aviation and shipping 3/n
Meantime China’s senior representative was insisting China is taking action whilst calling for other nations to do more immediately-it seems Japan and particularly Australia didn’t get memo 6/n theguardian.com/environment/20… but also reuters.com/business/cop/j… and theguardian.com/environment/20…
Powerful speech from an indigenous leader all men should read immediately 7/n theguardian.com/environment/20…
And some more analysis on what the pledges so far mean including from those excellent, indefatigable 8/n @CarbonBrief folks theguardian.com/commentisfree/… and and carbonbrief.org/analysis-do-co…
Some extra money for adaptation though no where near enough yet 9/n adaptation-fund.org/adaptation-fun…
You may well have read that coal pledges from week 1 are weak/ineffective but if you did, sorry I don’t agree- exempli gratia 10/n ukcop26.org/global-coal-to… and bloomberg.com/news/articles/… and straitstimes.com/asia/china-ple… and this excellent thread from @CoalFreeDave
I attended a bunch of excellent sessions on nature/biodiversity,climate,
nature-based solutions today so sharing few links on those issues 11/n unep-wcmc.org/news/in-order-… and theguardian.com/environment/20… and theguardian.com/environment/20… and theguardian.com/global-develop… and iucn.org/news/marine-an…
A new is also trying to effectively end the oil and gas industry 12/n politico.eu/article/cop26-…
And another coalition, this time of buyers, promises to buy zero carbon steel- a clever way to make business cases investable 13/n
If you’re confused about what is going on at COP and what it all means- and why wouldn’t you be?- this thread from @michaelujacobs should help 14/n
This thread from @mohadow should help explain what a successful COP looks like 15/n
On the cars announcement, this excellent thread from @ClimateBeard explains why it’s so significant and mentions even more zero HGV commitments! 16/n
If you want even more on where we are on pledges and analyses and temperature rises then this excellent thread from @hausfath does the business… 17/n
So, phew, that’s thread number 1 on today’s developments as they appeared to me. Next up..the negotiations and where we seem to be 18/n

So, with the fresh negotiating text emerging this morning, I thought a new thread on the final (or is it?!?) day of COP was warranted. Things will no doubt change during the day, but the text plus a few things caught my eye overnight #COP26 #EdinUniCOP26 1/n
Firstly, this series of ‘my day at COP’ is well worth a look, the latest one from Saleemul Huq who what’s attended every COP(!) and was feeling relatively positive on the progress securing recognition of loss and damage in the texts 2/n bbc.co.uk/news/science-e…
Some reflections on that China-US agreement from a few days ago from @LHongqiao here 3/n

So it’s day 11 of COP26 and time for a penultimate thread on a day themed as cities, and sub-national government action but in reality a day when attention and headlines were dominated by the ongoing negotiations 1/n
Cities action and regional action is vital of course but the announcements I spotted were somewhat understated 2/n here gov.uk/government/new… and here businessgreen.com/news/4040078/c…
There was an announcement of more climate finance from the Scottish Government 3/n gov.scot/news/scotland-…

Second thread of the day on today at COP- it was a long day with lots of sessions and I can’t pretend to have absorbed all the details of the negotiations but I can hopefully give a flavour #COP26 #EdinUniCOP26 1/n
As a starter for 10, @CarbonBrief give a great explainer of the major negotiating blocs 2/n here carbonbrief.org/interactive-wh… and here carbonbrief.org/interactive-th…
The U.K. presidency released the draft agreement text(s) at around 550am this morning which you can find here 3/n unfccc.int/sites/default/… and unfccc.int/sites/default/…

Another thread on developments at COP with the usual caveat it’s my impressions of what is a vast, complex gathering #COP26 #EdinUniCOP26 - and starting with the music of protest! 1/n
We need music faced with this hugely sobering report on the impacts on people of just two degrees of warming - and a Tuvalu Minister makes a dramatic gesture reflecting the desperation of small island states 2/n theguardian.com/environment/20… and theguardian.com/world/video/20…
Today was both gender and innovation day so it was good to see money announcing support for gender, adaptation and climate action- millions of girls face a loss of education as the climate changes 3/n businessgreen.com/news/4039974/c… and e3g.org/news/adaptatio… and socialnews.xyz/2021/11/09/12-…

So #COP26 #EdinUniCOP26 continues with today’s themes being gender and innovation. I thought I’d tweet on things I noticed over the last 2 days, and more later on today’s developments 1/n
Yesterday’s theme was adaptation, loss and damage and there were *some* announcements and a recognition that prevention is better than loss and that nature and people are vital to climate action 2/n businessgreen.com/news/4039905/l… and bbc.co.uk/news/uk-592021…
But as I listened to indigenous leaders from the Amazon talk about ravages and loss happening to their lands, and the repeated calls from developed nations for more funding for adaptation and ‘ reparations’ (formally ‘loss and damage’)it was hard to feel much progress made 3/n

I thought I’d do another thread on things that caught my eye today as highlighted by @guardian COP26 and @BusinessGreen @James_BG Remember I’m not physically at COP yet,and I am only giving my impression as the announcements and projects continue to pour out #COP26 #EdinUniCOP26
Today was finance day at COP- a lot was announced. I’m no finance expert but I do advise the University on what it means to invest our £500m endowment fund,c£700m treasury funds in a climate friendly and responsible way and have done for 8 yrs so hopefully have some insights 1/n
The U.K. chancellor made a speech (no questions and apparently young protesters not allowed!) setting out plans to make U.K. finance system net zero, including requiring net zero transition plans.Note this is mandatory to have plans but doesn’t require company by company zero 2/n
