Full #HPVvaccine media blitz last week claiming 90% success preventing #cervicalcancer.
But despite what @DonnellyStephen & @SimonHarrisTD would have you believe - the figures don't always speak for themselves.

Note Twitter article headline at odds with that of actual linked article.
If vaccine is indeed 90% effective then why use this news to urge vaxxed women to get screening asap?

BBC ran a similar report that a few years ago claiming "cervical cancer halved in 10 years".
No stats or study to back it up. In fact the claim was invented out of thin air via the word "reportedly".

National cancer statistics in countries with large #HPVvaccine uptake show that cervical cancer rates are INCREASING in the vaccinated age group.

Time for a cursory examination of "90%" claim using latest available cancer stats for England (2017).
Using 2008 as control year (mass vax for age group 12/13 was introduced that year along with catch up for older teens).
Uptake in first 3 years of program was 85%.

By 2017, 1st cohort of (2008) 12/13 yr age group were aged 21/22.
Table shows # of Cerv Cancer cases for both 2017 & 2008.
Significant increase, as seen with other countries.

In summary, in 2017, in the age group 15-24 (where vast majority were vaccinated) we see a 70% increase in cervical cancer rates in England compared to unvaccinated cohort from 2008.
