So it’s day 11 of COP26 and time for a penultimate thread on a day themed as cities, and sub-national government action but in reality a day when attention and headlines were dominated by the ongoing negotiations 1/n
An important announcement from my own University on ‘green chemistry and carbon’ as well as progress with Scottish/U.K. tidal energy 8/n here eng.ed.ac.uk/about/news/202…£9m-synhisel-project-could-save-co2-emissions-and-energy-costs-worldwide and here businessgreen.com/news/4040061/p…
If you did need reminded on who has historically emitted the most carbon and why climate change is a fairness and justice issue then this excellent briefing from @CarbonBrief is worth reading 12/n carbonbrief.org/analysis-which…
@MajorOfLondon made headlines on urban/cities themed day but the new chair of the C40 group of major cities and climate surely makes a good point 16/n theguardian.com/environment/20… - at the very least we need to support city leaders to respond
So, that’s it for now- no doubt the negotiators will work through the night with a new cover text expected tomorrow. I don’t think anyone expects the conference to finish on time 20/n
Others are far more expert on the negotiations but it seems to me a reasonable chance for commitments on 1.5 degrees, transparency, new rules for markets ( Article 6), common reporting periods and more regular updating- but only if developing countries receive more funding 21/n

Loss and damage has clearly been a very divisive issue and is intimately linked to the overall lack of fairness and justice that underpins the climate crisis 2/n
Well looks like my thread at 1pm wishing the plenary well was premature! I’ve had time to take the dog for a long walk and get back and the plenary still hasn’t started - although is imminent so another thread #COP26#EdinUniCOP26 1/n
Well I can’t spare the time to watch the plenary happening now (the dog demands a walk in the sunshine!) but a short thread on things since my last one at 11am! 1/n
In case you missed it, I think of the most promising things, ok it should have happened along time ago, is the cancelling and closures of coal power plants around the world that is now going to happen -see this excellent analysis from @CREACleanAir 2/n
