So, with the fresh negotiating text emerging this morning, I thought a new thread on the final (or is it?!?) day of COP was warranted. Things will no doubt change during the day, but the text plus a few things caught my eye overnight #COP26#EdinUniCOP26 1/n
Firstly, this series of ‘my day at COP’ is well worth a look, the latest one from Saleemul Huq who what’s attended every COP(!) and was feeling relatively positive on the progress securing recognition of loss and damage in the texts 2/n bbc.co.uk/news/science-e…
Some reflections on that China-US agreement from a few days ago from @LHongqiao here 3/n
A perspective on the demands of poorer countries who haven’t caused climate change but face most of the damage from it 4/n news.trust.org/item/202111102…
A reminder why we in the west/richer nations remain the primary causers of the climate crisis, when we consider our emissions per head- this from @EmberClimate on coal emissions per head 5/n ember-climate.org/commentary/202…
Speaking to lots of people, it does seem that this COP has had more focus on nature than ever before (and oceans) but this report from @wwf_uk reminds us that the NDCs have a long way to go really 6/n wwf.panda.org/wwf_news/press…
The @CDP would agree it’s the same at company level- more recognition, reporting, and systematic integration of nature into company strategy, risk analysis and management, targets is needed- I’d say especially as an holistic issue including ecosystems 7/n cdn.cdp.net/cdp-production…
Even within the Convention on Biological Diversity, it seems we have some way to go to focus on nature and people integrated with climate as one set of solutions 8/n See this report from @wwf_uk launched at COP wwf.panda.org/discover/our_f…
This announcement from Chevron is a reminder why, to me at least, we need to be cautious about just how proven CCS actually is (though I’d still develop it and BECCS/GGR/DACS) given where we find ourselves 9/n bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
This thread from a few days ago from @janrosenow caught my eye on the findings of a study of blue hydrogen from @CREDS_UK - which I’m not a huge fan of - spoiler- neither are they! 10/n
A reminder as well that apparently being the most powerful democratically elected leader in the world comes with conditions and critics….11/n theguardian.com/environment/20…
And a reminder that, even on the last official day of COP26 and with things winding down there are still at least 40 events I spotted to chose from! 12/n
So,lots more to come on the negotiations -perceptions depend on whether COP26 should do something really big (get us on a 1.5 degree pathway, fix historic injustices, provide enough money for adaptation and loss and damage) or whether this is real progress for a UN process 20/n
I never thought/think a single two week event will do the former and it does seem to this observer a lot of promising progress has been made- both in the negotiations and in terms of parallel commitments from business, finance system, coalitions and innovators 21/n
Again though, if you are suffering the effects of climate and nature loss just now, or don’t trust business or government, or are seized with the anxiety or the injustice of it all as an issue, then surely COP26 is/would always be a failure 22/n
Our economy naturally, as a function of how it currently works, doesn’t protect nature, doesn’t distribute resources fairly, and in its restless search for growth won’t value what many of us value- but that isn’t really what this conference could ever be about 23/n
As a University, we have been well represented- in the number of colleagues here, the initiatives we have launched, the talks given, the connections made, the information shared - and I see that as a major part of the value of these conferences.I’ve also learned a huge amount 24/n
I’m not naive however-much can still go wrong with the negotiations-I want to see agreement on much more climate finance,a goal for adaptation,on loss and damage,a proper market for carbon that has integrity (Article 6) and crucially, agreement for meaningful annual updates 25/n

Loss and damage has clearly been a very divisive issue and is intimately linked to the overall lack of fairness and justice that underpins the climate crisis 2/n
Well looks like my thread at 1pm wishing the plenary well was premature! I’ve had time to take the dog for a long walk and get back and the plenary still hasn’t started - although is imminent so another thread #COP26#EdinUniCOP26 1/n
Well I can’t spare the time to watch the plenary happening now (the dog demands a walk in the sunshine!) but a short thread on things since my last one at 11am! 1/n
In case you missed it, I think of the most promising things, ok it should have happened along time ago, is the cancelling and closures of coal power plants around the world that is now going to happen -see this excellent analysis from @CREACleanAir 2/n
