🧵”historians and those who study democracy say what has changed has been the embrace of violent speech by a sizable portion of one party...

In effect, they warn, the Republican Party is mainstreaming menace as a political tool.”
“even with the former president largely out of the public eye and after a deadly attack on the Capitol where rioters tried to overturn the presidential election, the Republican acceptance of violence has only spread.”
“Notably few Republican leaders have spoken out against violent language or behavior since Jan. 6, suggesting with their silent acquiescence that doing so would put them at odds with a significant share of their party’s voters.”
“The ranking G.O.P. lawmakers, Senator Mitch McConnell and Representative Kevin McCarthy, did not respond to repeated requests for comment. McCarthy, who initially condemned the Jan. 6 attack and said ‘violence is never a legitimate form of protest,’ more recently has joked about
“hitting Nancy Pelosi in the head with a gavel if he were to replace her as speaker. Like nearly all of the members of his caucus, McCarthy has said nothing about Gosar’s video.”
The base has been radicalized and party officials are afraid of them
“Carlos Curbelo, a Republican former congressman from Florida who is a critic of Trump, said Republicans needed to take a stronger approach against violent language and intimidation tactics.”
“The increasing violence of Republican speech has been accompanied by a willingness of G.O.P. leaders to follow Mr. Trump’s lead and shrug off allegations of domestic violence that once would have been considered disqualifying for political candidates in either party.”
“...Sean Parnell, a Senate candidate in Pennsylvania who was endorsed by Trump, appeared in court this week in a custody fight in which his estranged wife accuses him of choking her and physically harming their children.” NRSC chair Rick Scott declined to repudiate Parnell.
“There is little indication that the party has paid a political price for its increasingly violent tone... Yet violent talk has tipped over into actual violence in ways big and small. School board members & public health officials have faced a wave of threats,
“prompting hundreds to leave their posts. A recent investigation by Reuters documented nearly 800 intimidating messages to election officials in 12 states.”
“And threats against members of Congress have jumped by 107 percent compared with the same period in 2020, according to the Capitol Police...
Rep. Debbie Dingell, “said she was threatened by men with assault weapons outside her home last year after she was denounced by Tucker Carlson on his Fox News show, shared a small sample of what she said were hundreds of profanity-laden threats she has received.”
“Dingell, a Michigan Democrat...praised a Republican colleague, Rep. Fred Upton, for publicly sharing some of the threats he received after voting to approve the infrastructure bill.”

🧵This part of the interview with the head of the American Foreign Service Association Eric Rubin on Ted Cruz and others blocking the filling of ambassadorships and State Dept positions really stood out: “The other problem is our role in the world is different. 1/
“When I joined 36 years ago, we basically ran the world in competition with the Soviet Union, but we were unquestionably the leader. And in some ways, we still do but definitely not the way it was then, unquestionably not. And it's a different world, and it's harder. 2/
“And in some ways, it's definitely not the same job that people signed up for. But it's still not only as important as ever, I think it's more important right now when we have to fight for our interests and our country's place in the world.”

🧵Asked if he was requiring the Vienna talks to go back to the start, he said: “What is important is not from where we started, but..that we achieve a deal that has practical results for the parties. Our main objective is to remove the illegal sanctions that they have imposed on
“the Iranian nation in breach of UN resolutions. Any sanctions in breach of the JCPOA imposed by President Obama and President Trump have to be lifted. That is the agreement set out the JCPOA.”
pres. Obama? really hard to know what he means
just watching a snippet of his interview with amanpour, was also depressed by how hard, through translation, it is to know what he is saying. and imagining how much harder it will be when the US and Iran will not even be in same room.

🧵New from me: US ‘still very worried’ after talks with Russia about build-up near Ukraine

“We’re concerned by reports of unusual Russian military activity near Ukraine,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said. “We don't have clarity into Moscow's intentions. But we do know its playbook.”

In one of two locations searched yesterday, on East 35th Street, lives Spencer Meads, a longtime Project Veritas operative. A neighbor told the NYT they were woken up Thursday morning by FBI agents pounding on his door shouting, "Open up!" “Spencer, open up!” “FBI!”
The other location the FBI searched yesterday, according to the NYT, was in Mamaroneck, N.Y., where Project Veritas has an office. lohud.com/story/news/loc…
Noted a couple days ago that a relative in the midwest (with no connection to any political activism or right wing political causes) reported receiving a fundraising mailer from Project Veritas Legal Defense Fund. Seems the group must have bought access to a big GOP mail list?

WSJ: After meeting US envoy Jeff Feltman Oct. 24, Sudan Gen. al-Burhan “boarded a jet to Egypt for secret talks to ensure his plot would have regional support.” Sisi reassured him. Upon his return to Khartoum, Burhan arrested dozens of officials, inc. PM wsj.com/articles/milit…
Sudan’s military coup is the 4th in Africa this year. “Military strongmen in Guinea, Chad & Mali have in recent months taken power from weakened governments that were vulnerable to foreign interference and plagued by poor governance, stuttering economies, and insecurity”
Attempted “military coups have been foiled this year in Madagascar, Central African Republic and Niger.”
