Thread that nobody will read to shed some light on the final COP26 text and translate from bullshit legalese to English. Just the fun bits to have a bitter laugh. #COP26
They notice that climate justice is important for some, implying that some others (most of them) don't give a crap. And of course recognize that they are not on the front lines but MAPA and youth are. And do nothing to change it. #COP26
"Yeah, the whole scientific community might be right after all" and bonus: recycle (maybe it can be useful as toilet paper) #COP26
"Well, we are worried because what we keep doing is destroying the planet. We need to do something. Next time maybe. Hey climate crisis, raincheck?" #COP26
At least they kind of admit they didn't do anything about climate finance. Btw, there is no clear definition of climate finance yet. So there you go, another loophole. #COP26
They insure us that they still remember the Paris Agreement even if they are doing nothing about it and yes, again scientists MAY be right and 1.5 degrees over preindustrial levels MAY be better to ensure survival of those who will basically lose everything at 2 degrees. #COP26
First, they talk about methane but don't address agriculture, one of the biggest sources of methane emissions. And after that, the infamous clause 20 on coal and fossil fuels. This will need another tweet ⬇️
Word by word: "phase down" coal instead of "phase out" is bad. So everyone is outraged at India. Without diving into a geopolitical that should be addressed (I won't because I don't have enough knowledge of that at the moment), let's consider a couple of things.
1: IPCC stated that the so called developed countries must decarbonize first. Otherwise it's like climbing on a ladder to wealth and pushing it away once we are on top. Interesting insights here, even if it's about African countries and not India. nytimes.com/2021/11/09/cli…
2: again, it's bad and I'm not justifying the Indian government here, but the outrage of western leaders is simply ridiculous if we consider historical emissions. According to this paper, we are responsible for 92% of them. thelancet.com/journals/lanpl…
Another interesting word is "unabated", an addition provided by coal-lover Australia. Unabated coal basically means burning coal without absorbing its emissions. Spoiler: we can't absorb its emissions. Carbon capture technologies are still very weak. Corollary: it's greenwashing
And finally, "inefficient fossil fuels". It's a tautology: every fossil fuel is not only inefficient, but dangerous for the climate. If the delegates thought that there may be an efficient fossil fuel, we are in bigger troubles than we expected. #COP26
Wow, where do I start. Debt. Activists have been addressing this issue for ages (remember the people of Seattle, the so-called no globals?). And still rich countries pretend not to notice that debt is THE problem and its their fault. COVID simply exacerbated it. #COP26 #Covid
Ignoring the system of inequality and extractivism underpinning the need for loans, rich countries say their sorry and then proceed planning further loans (instead of grants) for loss, damages, and adaptation. Needless to say, it will reinforce the system that we should change.
Not-fun fact, many most affected countries spend more on debt than on adaptation, loss, and damage. Here's an article to understand better how messed up this is.
theguardian.com/environment/20…
We don't really need any comment on this. It's clear and ridiculous as it is. They regret not having done what they pledged to do. "You are doomed because of us, but we regret it". #COP26
Here they simply pretend they are listening to MAPA, indigenous community, youth activists, women rights activists, etc
And here is the result of the huge economic and logistical mess that was the YouthCOP: they express appreciation. Another useless pat on the back, thinking that they can keep us quiet organizing one every year. #COP26 #youthforclimate
In conclusion another pat on the back "hey, communities on the front lines are important, let's say it and do nothing at all!". Same with women, who btw were heavily underrepresented in the delegations. #COP26
That's all folks! I mean, there's much more, but these are the worst bits I found. What about yours? #COP26
All in all, I have to admit something good came out of #COP26: much more people were interested and much more people now know that we have been filled up with bullshit again. So hopefully, all these people will now be part of the solution by creating massive change on the streets
EDIT: it's "inefficient fossil fuels subsidies", which is different but not that much, since I can't imagine how a fossil fuel subsidy could be efficient considering that it's pretty clear that we should keep every fossil fuel in the damn ground
