Does he have a case for asylum or not?

It's not a question for you & me on Twitter.

He has a right to ask at the border for asylum & to have his case heard - and to be treated humanely in the process.

Maybe his claim is successful, maybe not. But he can ask. That's the law.
International law was not scribbled in crayon by a bunch of numpties.

No, the laws were created by experienced, knowledgeable people for exactly this kind of situation.

And it makes sense: evaluate each case individually, and treat people decently as you do.
It's not down to a popular vote by people who can't possibly have access to all the facts of the case.

It's not a social media free-for-all.

This is about the thing we all hold most sacred - human life - and the laws were created for a reason.
The EU's approach - "let them all die" - is completely counter to the law and spits on decades of practical experience and legal knowledge, not to mention the EU's founding principles.

It is also against our basic humanity.

I was tweeting this morning about the EU’s “let them all die” policy re migrants on #Poland-#Belarus border…

Suddenly, I had a new follower: the EU Commission spokesperson on humanitarian aid & crisis…

I asked him to defend the policy here in this thread…

And then…

To be fair, I don’t blame him. The EU’s “let them all die” policy is indefensible.

If they won’t change this inhumane, illegal policy, trying to hide in shame is his only option.

An interesting new follower today - one of the EU folks who has to sell the EU’s “let them all die” policy in #Poland-#Belarus

Well, go on, @balazs_iravju, tell us why “let them all die” is such a great idea. Please reference the EU’s founding principles, and…
…and tell is why the EU supports this dehumanisation of people by Poland’s government:

...and, @balazs_iravju, tell us why the EU refuses to act in accordance with its stated values...

4 bits of news…

Such gross inequality is self-defeating when fighting a global pandemic.

And yet, the EU, UK & other rich governments continue to deliberately block wider production of vaccines around the world to boost pharma company profits rather than save our lives.
Wave 4...

Wave 5...

Wave 6...

Will the global pandemic ever go away?

Will our leaders ever start fighting it like a global pandemic?

Or will they just keep treating as an opportunity for pharma companies to cash in?
There is a better way…

#Ukraine's arrest of Denis Kulikovsky, a senior member of the Russia-backed armed group DNR is big news: a step toward justice.

In 2015-18, he oversaw the “Izoliatsiia” detention center in Donetsk, where @hrw & others have documented torture.
hrw.org/news/2021/11/1…
The war in eastern #Ukraine will soon enter its 8th year. Human Rights Watch and other groups have documented grave crimes committed by Russia-backed armed groups in the east, many of which would amount to war crimes, including enforced disappearances, torture, and forced labor.
My colleague, @yuliagorbunova_, for example, witnessed the exhumation of a mass grave in Sloviansk, at the time controlled by Russia-backed armed groups who regularly beat and tortured civilians.

While the EU & its members focus on war talk, states of emergency & barbed wire, the acute suffering of women, men & children trapped in limbo is being ignored.

New dispatch from @LydsG, who’s just been on both #Poland & #Belarus sides of the border:
hrw.org/news/2021/11/1…
To prevent further deaths, the EU and its member states need to work with #Poland to immediately ensure humanitarian access to border areas, currently off-limits to those who can help.
#Poland should also halt unlawful pushbacks of migrants to #Belarus, where they will face inhuman and degrading treatment, and instead allow them access to its asylum procedure and decent reception conditions.

Save lives whenever you have the power to do so.

That's it.

That's the message for our leaders.
On vaccines,

on climate change,

on migration...

Just. Prioritise. Human. Life.
It really is that straightforward.
