I always knew that if Canadaland investigated the WE Organization, there was a good chance we would get sued.

That's why each time, before we published a story on WE, I'd ask myself two crucial questions...(thread) pressprogress.ca/craig-kielburg…
Question #1: is this story important enough to be worth the potential trouble?

Question #2: is our reporting solid enough that we can defend every detail of it in court? Because we very well may have to... +
When the answer to both questions was yes, I hit publish and held my breath, expecting to be hauled into court.

But here's the thing - WE Charity never sued. +
They did threaten us, though. Over the years, they've hired lawyer after lawyer to try to intimidate us, promising that we'd face historic consequences if we told the world what we knew about them. But we pushed forward, and they never made good on their threats. +
(One important thing to note is that anyone who sues for libel must face the discovery process. If WE Charity ever sued us, or if Craig or Marc Kielburger sued us, internal documents about their finances would become part of public court proceedings.) +
When reporting for our series The White Saviors, the same familiar process played out. After sending WE detailed questions, their lawyer wrote back with threats. We asked ourselves those 2 crucial questions, and the answer to both was yes. +
So once again, I hit publish. And once again, WE Charity did not sue us.

Marc & Craig Kielburger did not sue us.

Their mom did. +
As listeners of The White Saviors know, Theresa Kielburger is not accused of any illegality or wrongdoing in our podcast. This is explicitly noted in episode one of the show. +
Here's another important detail: we have press freedom in Canada. That means that it is legal to report on public court documents. +
Theresa Kielburger is suing Canadaland for $3 Million. Though claims are often much larger than rulings, $3M is more than our insurance would cover. It's more than everything Canadaland has. So this is literally a fight for the life of our news organization. +
We're here for it. Canadaland will vigorously defend its journalism, which we believe to be accurate, and we are confident that this lawsuit will be dismissed. +
In the meantime, the important thing is that we continue doing what we have done from the start - reporting and publishing. Canadaland will not be intimidated from continuing to report on Craig and Marc Kielburger or on the WE Organization. -30-

Maybe the most fascinating thing about the WE saga (to me anyhow!) is the path the Kielburgers took over the years from doing labor-left activism w unions, to delivering re-branding campaigns & PR services to multinational corporations w bad reputations.
canadaland.com/podcast/chapte…
When Craig started at age 12, Canadian labor unions embraced & funded his cause. After all, jobs shipped overseas to child workers/slaves meant fewer manufacturing jobs here in Canada... Craig kinda began as an anti-globalization crusader!
WE 1.0 (Free The Children) was about boycotts & factory raids. Their cause was de facto political.

But over time and with Marc's influence, Craig absorbed the ethos of "social entrepreneurship" and began dropping the jargon of Silicon Valley tech moguls.

So about this sordid CBC story... canadaland.com/cbc-fired-repo…
Rewinding to the start of it, think about how @AhmarSKhan worked for a public institution that glorified & normalized a bigot who routinely incited contempt for people who look like @AhmarSKhan. Don Cherry was at the top of the heap, a star, Khan at the very bottom...
Yet Khan spoke the truth about Cherry, succinctly and accurately. Saying true things in public is what journalists are supposed to do. The accuracy of his statement was affirmed by the CBC itself when, at long last, they shitcanned Don Cherry's racist ass.

This deep-dive into the #WEscandal by Bloomberg's @natalieobiko @daniellebochove @herbling moves on to the record things we heard about but didn't have enough sources to report.

It also includes a disturbing allegation I hadn't heard.

Here's the new stuff I took from it... 1/x
WE buildings in Kenya dedicated to visiting donors were then rededicated after those donors left. A plaque would be installed for a visit then removed & replaced with a new plaque for the next. Multiple parties were led to believe they had "built" the same charity project. 2/x
The actual physical work done in Kenya by voluntourists would be destroyed so the next batch of tourists vould re-do it. We heard of other instances of this. 3/x

BBQ boy played the media for suckers.

A few minutes of digging reveals who he really is: not a blue-collar freedom-fighter but a kid from one of Canada's richest neighbourhoods, whose dad owned the property on which he ran his faux-Texan smokehouse.
If you've eaten at his joint or read the reviews, you know his schtick: the fetishization of Lone Star realness. Meticulous recreation of Texas "authenticity" not just in the food but in the room and in his persona.

It's a Disneyland simulation and he's the princess.
Like his media champion Rex Murphy, he's a privileged guy performing as Joe Sixpack. Plaid flannels, backwards cap, scraggly beard. It's a costume I might throw together at the last minute if I forgot it was halloween.

It's embarrassing how effective this routine was.

1. Well, we're getting sued.

But not by who you think.

The person suing us for defamation is this guy – Keean Bexte.
2. Bexte works for Rebel Media.

Its owner, Ezra Levant, threatened to sue us in August after I called The Rebel "assholes, conmen and grifters" and criticized Bexte's behaviour.

Levant asked for me to retract & apologize.

I refused.

Then we got a visitor to our newsroom.
3. If you don't know Keean Bexte, he used to work for a website that sold white supremacist memorabilia.

Can you imagine Nixon advertising how wonderful & credible newspapers are, during Watergate?

Or Chrétien, during AdScam?

No politician who feels seriously challenged by the press would say something like this.

Praise from a Prime Minister should shame Canada's newspapers. 1/x
Trudeau in fact disparaged the Globe's credibility, the last time they actually became a problem for him; SNC-Lavalin.

They caught him, and all he could do was deny, and shoot the messenger.

I guess he's not too worried about the press right now.

What I've learned: Trudeau's nice tweets about newspapers are coordinated w the newspaper industry to promote a campaign his goverment pays for.

Heritage paid $249,700 to promote
#NationalNewspaperWeek - a mental hygiene campaign with a familiar bogeyman of "Fake News"
