R: Rittenhouse was justified in open-carrying an AR-15 because of all the rioting & looting going on
CNN: The Rittenhouse verdict will soon be announced
R: Get ready for more rioting & looting
D: Hey, look; two black people
R: Again with the rioting & looting
D: I detect an unmistakable pattern in your perception of civil demonstration
R: If we successfully associate “Black Lives Matter” with “rioting & looting”, it negates the need for us to address any issues with the police
D: You don’t say
R: We’re also pretty fucking racist
D: Wait, did you just admit you were racist
R: HOW DARE YOU!
D: I’m confused
R: Look, our entire modus operandi is to demonstrate our racism in every conceivable way but fiercely deny that we are racist. The next logical step is to just admit it, and THEN fervently deny it
R: I don’t know how much clearer we could make it that we consider black people threatening by default, but we give white people the benefit of the doubt even if they’re openly armed and kill two people. How is that not racist?
D: So you’re saying you are racist
R: HOW DARE YOU
D: So why not just admit it
R: We didn’t think we had to, after slagging Obama for being a Kenyan fire-breathing radical who faked his birth certificate & rallying around Trump’s border wall and calling BLM protesters “thugs” and Communist radicals like MLK’s enemies did
R: You’d think that after the actual Ku Klux Klan endorsed Trump in 2016 that people would have gotten wise to the fact that our agenda dovetails perfectly with what the white supremacists want
D: So why not just admit you’re racist?
R: We might lose respectability
R: Our base wants racist policies, but few things are more repellent to them than being called racist. We just convinced half of America that our public schoolteachers were weaponizing an obscure legal theory for the express purpose of calling white people racist
R: Ultimately, we believe that the path forward involves the schools refusing to talk about racism in any way, shape or form, just as the great Republican Martin Luther King would have wanted
D: I really don’t think—

Republicans everywhere are insisting that liberal school boards are brainwashing our children with Critical Race Theory.
This is a lie. Many of them know this. But it wins them elections.
When truth & power are at cross purposes, the GOP will choose power.
A report was released yesterday where the 1/6 insurrectionists insisted they were “force fed” CRT in jail. (My gut reaction featured many intemperate words.)
“CRT indoctrination” was never a grievance that could be a legitimately addressed. It was always a political dog whistle.
You can’t tell Democrats to “Stop forcing Critical Race Theory on us” when Democrats were never doing that in the first place.
But politics is far less about what is really happening than what people BELIEVE is happening.
The grievance, not the resolution, was always the goal.
1. Oh, the fuck they were 2. How fucking stupid do they think we are 3. Does anybody fucking care anymore what CRT actually is 4. They don’t teach it in the fucking jails 5. I fucking promise 6. Enough with this overused fucking dog whistle 7. 8. 9. 10. weasels fucking weasels
I will concede that they are teaching Critical Race Theory in jail EVERY BIT AS MUCH as they are teaching it in the public schools, which all but the stupidest motherfuckers on Planet Earth understand is “not at all”.
GOP 2022: We Are the Stupidest Motherfuckers on Planet Earth
This is how Team MAGA is going to gin up sympathy for the insurrectionists:
“They’re being force-fed Critical Race Theory! In prison! OH, THE HUMANITY!”
To them, CRT is forced Deep State indoctrination. It’s every bit as threatening as Dr. Fauci & the COVID vaccines.
Maybe the enormous amount of trouble Rittenhouse clearly went to in order to insert himself into this crowd carrying a semiautomatic weapon suggests that he wasn’t exactly “minding his own business” when the guy with the skateboard viewed him as a threat
Rittenhouse’s defenders focus on how THREATENED he felt, while deliberately yadda-yaddaing over the fact that he was not licensed to carry a gun & was openly carrying an AR-15 in a crowd 40 miles from his home.
I know these things aren’t important to them, but context matters.
Mind you, the NRA would love nothing more than to eliminate any and all restrictions on age, and what kind of weapon you’re allowed carry in public. If Rittenhouse manages to get away with this, I’m sure they will be watching this case very closely for precedent.
R: Schools are teaching our kids CRT
D: Show one example
R: Well, they’re forcing it on teachers
D: Name one school that does this
R: Well, it’s clearly infecting the curriculum
D: Be specific
NYT: Democrats Take CRT Literally But Not Seriously
R: WE WIN AGAIN 😂
D: There have been multiple court hearings & thousands of pages of documentation demonstrating that Trump covertly sought Russia’s help in getting elected
R: You have no evidence LOL
FOX: There’s a nationwide plot to shame white children for being racist
R: YOU HAD ME AT HELLO
CNN: The Coronavirus death toll continues to rise among the unvaccinated
R: Ehh, CNN and the Democrats are just trying to scare us
FOX: A teacher somewhere in California used the words “white people” & “racist” in the same sentence
While I do not entirely dismiss your goal, I regret to inform you that there is no way to “talk about race” that will not alienate the segment of the voting population that adamantly takes offense at any suggestion that racism remains a thing
The last six months of CRT-related discussion has hammered home the point that there is literally nothing you can say about racial inequality that won’t disturb the Princess-and-the-Pea-level sensitivity of a MAGA conservative: “STOP ACCUSING MY WHITE CHILDREN OF BEING RACIST!”
So although I am certainly open to a realpolitik solution that would incentivize white voters to embrace racial progress, I struggle to consider exactly how such a thing could be done outside of “slip it into the background without really talking about it.”
