Tomorrow morning we're dropping our biggest release of the year @MightyNetworks.

For it, we chose to focus on engagement. Why engagement? 🧵
Engagement is the key that unlocks:

- Creator independence and ownership
- New, interesting business models
- The next wave of community innovation & ownership

#independentcreator
Last month research we commissioned–the largest study of creators ever–was published.

89% of creators said they want to move away from near total dependence on social & be independent, but only 21% are today.

What’s driving this “independence gap”?
newcreatormanifesto.com
There's a deep seeded fear that moving off social (or Discord) will mean that a creator, web3 project, or brand will lose their fans, followers & members.

And they wouldn’t be wrong.
The truth is that for so long combining ownership **and** engagement on independent platforms has been really friggin’ hard.
It’s not just about copying the features you and your members find in a Facebook group or on Discord. Even if you have the product and engineering chops to build it, expectations are changing too fast.
That’s why when you go looking for independent platforms, they tend to only offer 1-2 pieces of the puzzle—online courses **or** chat **or** events **or** a newsletter **or** livestreaming **or** subscriptions.
But members hate hopping from service to service. And for creators and even web3 projects, the Frankensteining of multiple services is an even bigger nightmare.
So, we sheepishly return to Facebook or Discord––threading together with duct tape and zapier a “no code” solution to try to make it work (all the while complaining about community platforms).
The truth is an integrated solution is exponentially harder to build than individual features alone.

The interactions **between** features is really difficult to get right.

But what’s the alternative?
To push this complexity to creators and projects to manage?

How’s that going for everyone?

This is the challenge we took on @MightyNetworks over the past six months.

The result is The Engagement Drop going live tomorrow.
The Engagement Drop unlocks spontaneity:

Go live.
Start a group chat.
Capture and upload video.

Combine this with the existing **structured** features of a Mighty Network—courses, articles, groups, events, and members—and something magical happens.
With The Engagement Drop, every now Mighty Network has spontaneity **and** structure in one place.

This also means ownership **and** engagement is possible in one place.

What do we mean by ownership?
On @MightyNetworks:

- You own your member data with full access to emails, data, and activity.

- There’s no algorithm that sits between you and your members, ever.

- Your Mighty Network is just your Mighty Network, with your own accounts, so spam is less a factor.
Imagine:

- Going live to introduce a new membership or run an event from anywhere.

- Organizing collabs or challenges for your members from your phone.

- Encouraging group chats to collaborate on a project, finish a course, or meetup.

Watching your community 🚀
It’s now easier to get started. Easier to engage. Easier to chat.

And on @mightynetworks, you still have the structure to keep your community organized and productive at 10, 100, or 100,000 members. (đź‘€ Discord chaos.)
The best part? Your business model is right there too. No no code to set up subscriptions or payments––with more experimental (read web3) models coming in 2022.
The era of working for free at the mercy of an algorithm has to end. creatorscalculator.com

1/ A few days ago, my mom sent me an text, “Hey Gina, did you see the Mark Zuckerberg news? He said Facebook was going to focus on privacy and groups. Hope you’re great!”
2/ Like my mother, I had heard the news. Unlike my mother, I happen to be an expert on building groups around interests and passions on platforms other than Facebook.
3/ I’m a passionate believer that there should be millions of different social networks for every conceivable interest, goal, purpose, and lifestyle.

1/ So, about “The Investor Rebuilding Kleiner Perkins” (which is unfortunately behind a paywall, @jessicalessin). I read it today with a feeling of deja vu.

2/ Let’s start here: "Under Mr. Hamid’s leadership, the firm pledged to improve the diversity of the firm, adding two women to its investment team last fall: Monica Desai, who is focusing on financial investments, and Annie Case, who supports investments in the consumer sector."
3/ Join me for a trip back to 2004. 👇
