The #bcpoli govt tried to explain why BC is the only province that DOES NOT issue emergency text alerts 📵

I say "tried" because at best it was nonsensical, at worst it was political spin & misinformation ⚠️

Our Public Safety Min raised concerns --
about OVERcommunicating 🧐1/
Abbotsford's mayor said he didn't want to alarm "the whole city" about this evacuation, and the Min insisted he didn't want to "panic" a large area
BUT the @AlertReady system goes through targeted cell towers, so urban areas allow for more precision 2/
I spoke w @AlertReady myself and they explained:
➡️Govt decides where the risk is and warning needed
➡️There can be spillover msgs depending on cell tower range/overlap
➡️That's why the text msg is impt: "If you live in Sumas Prairie...if not..."
How would that cause panic? 3/
I am deeply concerned civic officials are held responsible for triggering it, but aren't fully briefed on the capabilities
Also, are they pressured NOT to use it?
Because since 2019, there've been 475 emergency text alerts in every prov - EXCEPT BC
Why?
4/
alertready.ca/alert-count/in…
Other provinces use the system for flooding, tornadoes and wildfires -- but we've had all that plus the heat dome, a town burnt to the ground and widespread infrastructure destruction in the past 4 months and...crickets
@HamishTelford was blunt about this #bcpoli failure:
5/
Farnworth gave a lot of justificns (incl record rain) but my jaw hit the floor when he said they don't expect to have @AlertReady in use till wildfire season(!)and ensure it works w "existing systems that are in place, that you're not overlapping & you're avoiding duplication."6/
Don't you want overlap and duplication in an emergency?? Doesn't that help ensure more people know there's a serious risk? Why just rely on Tweets, FB posts, @drivebc's website and highway signs they currently use when you could have that PLUS A FAILSAFE TEXT SYSTEM? 7/
Think about how brilliant the tech is:
🆘Calls start coming in about a serious slide, are confirmed by police, crews are dispatched
⚡️Meanwhile, @EmergencyInfoBC can remotely active an alert in minutes: drivers get a text warning about the danger zone as far away as EMBC wants 8/
I may be an idealist, but I don't think you can overcommunicate in an emergency, especially if your message is clear and concise about what's up, who's impacted, where, and what to do
This is a #bcpoli story I suggest you read AND watch 9/9

BC's Min. of Citizen's Services insists $25/FOI request won't be a barrier, but:
1. Mins & agencies are increasingly punting routine requests to FOI
2. They know newsroom budgets are insanely tight and they can further starve journalists of info that way
#bcpoli
The rationale is other provs charge and "BC receives more FOI requests annually than the other 3 western provinces combined."
Repeat after me: stories like this shouldn NOT require FOI, they should be disclosed as they're completed:

The truly frustrating thing about the Freedom of Info backlog? It could easily be slashed overnight by providing the info through well-staffed comms depts
Yes, personal info of patients/staff needs redacting, but 99% OF REQUESTS DO NOT
No one should expect FOI as the new normal

Susan Tasson went to Royal Inland Hospital with stomach pain Tuesday night.
The beloved Kamloops grandma died 6 hours later in the waiting room, her head resting on her daughter's shoulder, having never seen a doctor. 1/ @CTVVancouver #bcpoli

The health minister was asked to confirm this @KamThisWeek story describing only 3 nurses were on shift instead of 24. Adrian Dix didn't deny the number and insisted they've injected $1m into RIH this year to deal with ED shortages. 2/

But this comes in the bigger context of two major factors in BC:
1. COVID cases consuming the lion's share of scant hospital resources
2. A staffing shortage that I haven't seen addressed in a meaningful or constructive way 3/

BC's premier has kept a low profile during Covid to "focus on experts"
HOWEVER he's had enough gaffes that keeping him out of the spotlight may serve a dual purpose👀
BUT no public appearances for 4 wks as fires grow & the 4th wave surges?
Major backlash

This was the last time Horgan was seen publicly, on July 21. His office has confirmed he's on vacation but won't confirm he's in Atlantic Canada nor when he went.

As for gaffes, there was the millennial blame game 🤦‍♀️

The premier was also asked about preps and messaging for the unprecedented heat wave.

"Fatalities are part of life," responded Premier Horgan. "The public was acutely that aware we had a heat problem."

100+ died related to heat in Metro alone: #bcpoli
bc.ctvnews.ca/never-seen-any…
More context: the VPD say they typically respond to 3-4 sudden death calls per day. Since Friday, they've had an average of 14 sudden deaths per day, describing it as "unprecedented casualties."
Is this part of life?
And we now have QUITE the subtweet in response to Horgan's comments 👀

Have BC's COVID cases & deaths really been that much lower than QC, or have they been looking harder?
That's one of the big questions arising from a bombshell report by @MoriartyLab et al, who believe the death toll could be DOUBLE.

Their peer-reviewed paper to @RSCTheAcademies is dense and complicated and the result of many months of work (I started talking to Moriarty about this in early spring).

It's been no secret the excess death rate in BC and Canada has been high. @stats_canada has been saying so since March. The question is, what have those people died from?
The paper's scope was ppl 45+, from Feb 1-Nov 30 2020, adjusted for opioid deaths. 3/

“It was a way of making sure we weren't overly cautious," said Dr. Henry when asked about non-outbreak protocols in BC care homes with an infected staffer.
"Enhanced surveillance" doesn't prompt a testing team nor trigger notifications.@CTVVancouver 1/

He spent 4 mos in an FOI battle to find out how many times VCH & FH declared "enhanced screening" rather than outbreaks in the 2nd wave, and @ianjamesyoung70 did a deep dive into the stats w grim conclusions.
The health authorities still left out info. 2/
scmp.com/news/china/dip…
What are enhanced surveillance/monitoring protocols?
In Vancouver Coastal: hold a couple meetings and keep a close eye for more symptoms.
In Fraser: the above, plus shut down visits & group activities in affected wards.
Dr. Henry points out the majority don't see more cases. 3/
