A #thread on #coaltransitions
In 2016, when India was upping it's RE capacity and the first murmurs of coal #phaseouts had begun, @nit_set and I had had a conversation over chai on impact it will have on workers in coal mining belts as well as industries reliant on the coal (1/n)
5 years on, that conversation has turned into a full fledged project on helping coal workers and communities manage the transition. (2/n)
In January 2021, @NFI_India launched a climate program with the aim of helping rural and marginalized communities manage the fallouts of transition and global and national climate policy. (3/n)
The aim is to bridge information assymetry and bring these communities and their issues to the forefront of the climate debate. To begin fulfilling that aim, we at @NFI_India are releasing the first report under the climate program on livelihood impact of coal transitions (4/n)
The study analyses the impact on formal and informal workers across coal, transport, bricks, power, sponge iron and steel sectors. It is intended to serve as a baseline on issues related to livelihood transitions in key coal bearing states and regions. (5/n)
Highlighting the challenges and finding key solutions are more important today than ever before, particularly in the aftermath of the backlash India faced at #COP26 (6/n)
Join us for the launch of the report and a stimulating discussion on Monday 22nd November, 2021 between 11-12:30pm. To register click on the link below. Hope to see you there!
