I’ll start with the most recent accessibility story I faced in #yeg while attending #CANMNT first off my goal is to bring AWARENESS & EDUCATION to build bridges & make this city better, stronger & to open up conversations not to tear anyone down! First.. (THREAD)
I will acknowledge the incredible snow storm we had just 24hrs before no one could be prepared for 10+ CM of snow in that time but again welcome to Alberta! I parked a block away at a friends & wheeled.. the walks/streets were not cleared AT ALL it was hard enough for ABLE BODY..
Let alone people with mobility issues! I got stuck multiple times within a block very thankful for my crew to help me navigate at the same time my power chair was working OT add on the cold w/ the deep snow it actually killed my fully charged chair within a block…
Arriving at the game very smooth process thanks to staff for putting up with 44k people! Once in tho a whole other bag the uncovered walkways (endzones) absolute mess again not cleared added to a family member pushing 100+lbs plus me not ideal situation.. almost fell out..
Remember this is on the way to the seat still! Got to my seat (wheelchair section RR) & was told it was blocked off due to overflow media seating! Thankfully they let me sit there anyway! Enjoyed the game CANADA WON!
Then we began the horrendous journey back to the car which was another adventure in itself again! Now again remember off the top I acknowledged the snowstorm I get it but here’s maybe a solution to be proactive NEXT TIME or moving forward..
What if you had a snow removal team on standby? Or staff better equipped & trained to help people with disabilities!? It was brought to my attention yesterday that they over budget for liquor and food sales (not complaining) but what if they budgeted for events like this?
That definitely not a stretch either! My worry is what if this happens to someone with less mobility then me or a senior & they get stuck enough with nobody around? That’s when it becomes media! We need to be PRO ACTIVE in thinking about everyone!
Now I’ll get the response from some well you should’ve stayed home etc! Why cause I can’t live my life? Can’t experience!? Need to live in a bubble? That’s not me & I refuse! What’s done is done my job is to educate/awareness & to change moving forward! #CANMNT#yeg#Disability
