The Russian word for a sports fan is "bolel'shchik." I'll explain in a minute. But first, did you know that for a long time Americans had no word for it?
Sports fans appeared in the US in the 1850s, but the word didn't come about until early XX c..
Until baseball began to proliferate in NYC and people began to support teams from their neighborhoods, their only interest in sports was betting. The concept of following a team over a period of time with nothing at stake except emotional investment was utterly new...
So, for a long time, folks who weren't into this culture, just assumed these were some new type of gamblers. This is how they were described in newspapers. Eventually, the word "fanatic" was used.
This, of course, tells us something about the prevailing emotion in the stands...
... or, rather, how they were viewed by outsiders. American sports fans were, first and foremost, explosively emotional and, to others, irrationally so.
Interestingly enough, in England, the word "supporters" is used for those who are more serious and invested into the culture..
The word "bolel'shchik" tells you all you need to know about the Russian approach. We did adopt the English word (in the form of "fanaty"), but it describes soccer hooligans exclusively.
"Bolel'shchik" is ours. Oh so very, very ours.
The root word is "bol", which means "pain"
"Bolet" is a verb derived from it. Its meaning is "to be ill." Therefore, "bolel'shchik" is someone who feels constant pain and/or is very sick. However, the word applies exclusively to sports supporters. A regular ill person is "bol'noi."
How Dostoyevskian is this shit?
The prevailing emotion of a Russian football fan (and this is where the word originated) is, of course, pain. Constant, unyielding feelings of sickness and discomfort that can only be understood if you ever sat on a wooden bench to watch a 0-0 slog in half-frozen mud in Saratov.
To support a sports team, in Russian culture, primarily means to experience pain, to be emotionally unwell, to subject one's mental health to voluntary mistreatment. To be unhealthily addicted to something bad.
Don't ever ask me why I root for the Buffalo Bills and Sabres again.

An important message. No sports movie in history has done more to advance antisemitic stereotypes than The Mighty Ducks, which is by no means surprising, considering it's by Disney.
This film is shameful and wrong on so many levels that this particular crime is often overlooked. Image
OK, so, first off, I hope it's not a surprising opinion that the entire MD franchise is chuck full of racism. It often frames entire storylines and serves as a backbone of plots. I mean, behold the Ducks' Oreo Line! The film just tells you right off the bat: it's racist af. Image
It goes without saying that all "ethnic" players on the Ducks rigidly conform to whatever racial stereotype was just on the right side of acceptable in the early 90s. Which, to be sure, is extremely unacceptable. I mean, yeah, black kids aren't outright gobbling watermelons, but

OK, here are some non-verdict/non-judge related Rittenhouse takeaways. None of them are good.
1) Between Kenosha and Portland, it has become plainly obvious that America's police force is certainly not apolitical, fair or unbiased...
In Kenosha, an underaged right-wing gun nut was allowed to openly cosplay a cop in the middle of a protest and was welcomed by the cops who then treated him nicely even after he killed two people. In Portland, an armed antifa counterprotester who shot a Proud Boy was executed...
... without a trial or an attempt to make an arrest. Both situations involved exclusively white people, which tells us that the cops have moved beyond mere racism and are now firmly taking political sides. Going forward, be ready for them to treat insurrectionists as "our people"

In 2004, Ukrainians rejected the results of clearly rigged elections, when Moscow attempted to "elect" a Putin marionette. Of course, 4 years later, Ukrainians turned around and promptly voted for the same marionette themselves. And then, overthrew him.
Ukraine is like that.
Russian liberals, when wanting to present a friendly face to @Ukraine, use the phrase "we are one people", which the Kremlin then uses to push its imperial policies.
But Ukrainians and Russians are not one people, and the most striking difference is how they treat their rulers.
Russians, whose ideas about statehood and power were shaped by the Golden Horde, view their ruler as a sacred figure and slavering deference to him as normal, expected behavior.
Ukrainians, who were influenced by proto-democratic Poland and Cossack military anarchy, are different

It's amazing how being a school teacher has prepared me to understand the mindset and behaviors of the American right and its loudmouth psychotic performance artists.
In fact, istening to them gives me more flashbacks to teaching middle school than talking to my own son does...
For example, any middle school teacher will tell you that one of the biggest challenges with controlling preteens is that they do not consider consequences as adults do.
It's not even that they don't understand the relationship between cause and effect. It's that they don't care.
For an adult or a mature teen, understanding of consequences brings about a modicum of reflection and analysis. Which are necessary for any behavior modification.
For a middle schooler, consequences aren't as important as instant gratification and emotional response...

All guns should be banned. Unless you can prove you need one for hunting (in which case you must register and only buy a specific type of hunting weapon), no guns should be allowed.
This country will be destroyed by guns. It's already in the process of doing so.
I used to be agnostic on this issue. I had no firm opinion. But after I saw what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary, after I saw how America, with tiny children lying dead, shredded by bullets, ran to hug its guns and moan about how it will never let them go, I was broken.
This nation is deeply, seriously sick. I don't think there is a cure. It loves its guns more than it loves its children. It will allow itself to burn before parting with them.
And it will. I don't see how else this can end.

What do you suppose would happen if a black activist showed up to a Proud Boys rally with a loaded SuperKill-300 and gallivanted around?
By which I mean:
* assuming he got past the police (which he wouldn't)
* assuming he was immediately and violently assaulted (which he would)
* assuming he shot a few of them dead on the spot
* assuming he had no permit for the SuperKill-300 and had no right to carry it
* assuming he then went to a Black Panther rally in a "Kill the Whitie" t-shirt.
I am not even asking whether he'd be acquitted. This part is clear.
I am not even asking whether every single self-defense/gun right advocate would have been defending him.
This part is downright laughable.
I am not even asking how far they'd throw away the key.
The answer is "Very, very far."
