Thread. Quotes by famous Azerbaijani people.
"During the Soviet period, urban planners tried to develop "satellite cities" like Sumgayit, 30-60 kilometers away from Baku. This is not a great distance, but the fact that people had to be moved from their native environment was very unsettling."

Elbay Gasimzade, architect
"The best memory is the people’s, and history is consistent when memories are created in an open and liberal environment."

Vafa Guluzade, diplomat
"Azerbaijani cinema never reached the level of Georgian cinema. Whenever anyone talks about Soviet cinema, they usually think of Georgian and Russian films, not Azerbaijan films."

Rasim Ojagov, film director
"Baku is a unique city. Geographically, it's where East meets West, and as such, it has a phenomenal, exceptional destiny enabling us to successfully combine the elements of Eastern civilization with European elements."

Rustam Ibragimbekov, screenwriter
"The Soviets placed science and technology on a pedestal. They also instilled the belief that you owed something to society-that you should focus on what contribution you could make to others."

Lotfi A. Zadeh, mathematician
"On every space mission, there is always incredible anxiety and pressure that something could go wrong and the mission end in failure and tragedy. With his [Sergei Korolev] passing, the entire responsibility fell upon me."

Kerim Kerimov, aerospace engineer

When Cristopher Columbus arrived in 1492, it's estimated that 5 million to 15 million people lived in North America.

The number declined sharply to fewer than 238,000 by the late 19th century. #genocide #ThanksgivingDay
Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas but Leif Erickson first landed on Canadian shores almost 500 years before Columbus arrived in the Bahamas.

Erickson was converted to Christianity by King Olaf I in what is now Norway.
Columbus Day is a national embarrassment for the US.

No country should ever celebrate genocide.

Christopher Columbus is a man who created disposition and genocide of millions of Natives in America.

Today the UN marks International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

Not all men practice violence against women but all women live with the threat of male violence every single day. All over the Earth.

#ViolenceAgainstWomen
We must start from the home if we are to fight discrimination and injustice against women.

If a woman cannot be safe in her own house then she cannot be expected to feel safe anywhere.

#NoToDomesticViolence #ViolenceAgainstWomen
Domestic violence causes far more pain than the visible marks of bruises and scars.

Sadly, there's been an awful silence in male culture about #ViolenceAgainstWomen, we need to break the silence and we need more men to do that.

Thread. I've covered Azerbaijani cuisine many times. We've talked about kebabs, plovs, desserts, even bread but never touched soups.

So to all soup lovers, enjoy this thread.
Ovdukh.

What is it?

A rereshing Azerbaijani cold soup made with yogurt, water, cucumbers, and spring onions. In order to prepare it, yogurt is combined with water that has been boiled, then left to cool. Popular on hot summer days.
Kufta bozbash is a traditional Azerbaijani meatball soup.

The essence of this soup is in the flavor of the köfte (meatballs). Ground meat (usually lamb) is mixed with finely chopped onions, rice, dried mint, and dried lime flowers.
