🗣️The Health Secretary will address concerns that the variant is more transmissible than previous strains and could potentially evade the vaccines.

The B.1.1.529 variant has been found in 77 cases in South Africa, four in Botswana, and one in Hong Kong

"The World Health Organization has called a special meeting this morning and that meeting is taking place right now"
The Health Secretary said: "Early indications show this variant may be more transmissible than the delta variant, and current vaccines may be less effective against it. It may also affect the effectiveness of one of our major treatments"

Sajid Javid said the UK remains in a "strong position" thanks to the "tremendous gains" made by the vaccination programme and ongoing booster programme, but added the incomplete booster rollout meant people should "act with caution"
