🧵 @sajidjavid told Marr this morning it would be possible to quarantine for ten days in a timely way the contacts of those with Omicron because the new Covid variant comes up negative for the “S” gene in PCR tests (what he called “S gene drop out”), unlike Delta. 1/
I had already been told about this helpful characteristic of some PCR tests, which would allow rapid detection of Omicron growth relative to Delta. But I was also told only just over a third of tests carried out by NHS Test and Trace had the ability to check for the S gene. 2/
So although this characteristic of some PCR tests would help @UKHSA chart the growth of Omicron, it would not achieve just-in-time quarantining of contacts of those infected with Omicron, because for two thirds of Covid positives, gene sequencing would be required. 3/
And gene sequencing takes time. The point is that quarantining Covid contacts is only a solid defence against widespread transmission if it happens almost instantaneously with the test result. 4/
That is why I asked @UKHSA and @DHSCgovuk first thing whether @sajidjavid has plans to make sure all PCR tests can look for the S Gene. I asked shortly after 10am and was promised an answer. I am still waiting for that answer. 5/
In the meantime there is reason to fear that the UK lacks the infrastructure to detect contacts of those infected with Omicron fast enough to meaningfully slow the spread of a variant thought to be the most transmissible we have encountered. 6/
This will cause huge uncertainty for schools, universities and employers. They have been instructed - as @nadhimzahawi has just done for schools and universities - that contacts of those suspected of having Omicron must isolate for ten days. 7/
But employers and head teachers may have to wait days after an infection is detected to know whether a Covid sufferer has Delta - where isolation of contacts is not mandated - or Omicon. This potential delay feels like a recipe for chaos. 8/
As luck would have it, @UKHSA has now responded to my question about whether PCR tests can in themselves provide a decent idea of whether someone infected with Covid has Omicon, And the answer is only in about 50% of tests. Which is obviously not universal coverage 9/
A UKHSA official said: “50% of the Lighthouse laboratory network carrying out Pillar 2 community testing can assess samples for S gene target failure (SGTF). We routinely monitor these outputs to look for spikes and variance patterns of testing”. 10/
UKHSA seems to be saying it has the testing capacity to chart the growth of Omicron in close to real time but not to identify all those with Omicron in less than the time it takes to do gene sequencing. As I said, this feels like a problem. 11/
It also contradicts @sajidjavid’s optimism on Marr that standard PCR tests would help NHS Test and Trace speedily tell contacts of those infected with Omicron to isolate for ten days. 12/
But this is work in progress. UKHSA says: “We are engaging all of the labs that provide private travel testing services to understand how many of them will be able to carry out the S gene target failure or equivalent assay focused on this variant’s genomic changes” 13/
In other words, the government cannot yet be confident that the day 2 tests for travellers to the UK can distinguish Delta from Omicron. Which is plainly a problem. 14/
And for labs used by NHS Test and Trace, “where equipment does not routinely allow for SGTF assay and community samples are being tested, we are rapidly developing and rolling out a genotyping assay to give an early indication of a probable [Omicron] variant case”. 15/
There is no indication of how long it will take to upgrade the labs. In the first instance: “close contacts of suspected cases, returning travellers and individuals in hospital are the priority ”. But those “suspected cases” will in too many cases not be identified by a PCR. 16/
Finally, finally, UKHSA is keen to stress that “close contacts of suspected and confirmed Omicron cases will have samples priority tested for S gene target failure and will also have whole genome sequencing”. But to repeat my point (again) this takes time.

I am wondering whether I've been naive in thinking that the COP26 draft cover declaration will keep 1.5 degrees alive, and whether I have attached too much weight to paragraph 29 that "requests" countries toughen up their commitments to reduce emissions before 2030. My...
concern, reinforced by the US agreement with China, is that China will feel under little pressure to bring forward its commitment that its greenhouse gas emissions should peak by 2030. And unless China becomes more ambitious, there is no prospect of global warming...
being limited to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels. Much will depend therefore on how paragraph 29 is implemented. There will be a huge and heavy burden on @AlokSharma_RDG, as COP president for a year - and by implication on @BorisJohnson too - to be guardian and...

Having heard the @MarosSefcovic press conference and read the @DavidGHFrost statement, it is clear that the decision by @BorisJohnson whether to trigger Article 16 and start a damaging trade war with the EU will almost certainly be a purely political one by him, because...

The national living wage is set to be increased from £8.91 per hour to £9.50 I understand, on the advice of the Low Pay Commission. The recommendation has been put to the business secretary, @KwasiKwarteng, who is the minister responsible for the Commission. The 6.6%...

I pointed out three months ago that daily dashboard infection figures don’t include anyone infected for a second time, and that I thought this unfortunate, because by definition it means those daily figures are not the whole Covid19 story. These daily figures…
