John Swinney adds “There must be a degree of community transmission” after analysing the travel history of positive cases
At this point, there is no evidence of “serious illness” in these cases. But Dep FM still says it’s unclear what impact omicron has on illness.
Swinney says physical distancing is an obvious measure to lower transmission. Says “We may need to look at measures of that nature” but nothing confirmed yet.

Says it’s too early for talk of Xmas changes. Adds we need to follow current mitigations(masks, ventilation etc)

A new strategic framework of tiered restrictions will be published on Friday. It’ll go to parliament next week. New tiers will be set out in advance of them coming in on 2nd Nov. FM says this could potentially lead to tougher restrictions for all or parts of scotland

Today’s Scottish covid figures

1,456 cases (FM says this includes “catch up” figures from delayed tests over weekend)

19.9% of newly tested people positive. 11.4% of overall tests positive.

824 in hospital (up 70). 69 in ICU (up 8)

15 deaths in last 24 hours.
FM says Cabinet will meet tomorrow and discuss new measures for hospitality (current measures - particularly strict in central belt - run out on Sunday)

As of today hospitality businesses shut or restricted due to current covid measures can apply for £40mil worth of grants.

On low case numbers testing positive yesterday (316), FM says a number of tests were diverted from Glasgow to other labs in UK network. Says she expects the true number to be included in today and tomorrow’s figures.
FM says focusing on % of those “newly tested” is becoming “less reliable” as one seventh of Scottish population has been tested. Says this is making the figure “artificially high”. Scot gov is going to start taking the proportion of people testing positive from absolute total
