Today we're announcing the NJ Media Mentors program, an idea from the mind of @gunnysvg to pair volunteers with local news leaders looking for mentorship.
Have insight to share? We want to connect you with people who need it the most!
Especially over the last 10 years, a lot of people who spent decades working for news organizations have left their jobs. They’ve been bought out, retired or got tired of the turmoil in the media industry.
Many of those people have a wealth of knowledge about all aspects of the business: Some worked as editors, some were talented reporters, others are incredible copy editors, advertising sales managers and more.
In response, we're launching the #NJMediaMentors volunteer program, which seeks to recruit retirees who are willing to mentor local news outlets in NJ. We especially seek to pair volunteers with entrepreneurs of color.
The idea for this program comes from @gunnysvg, the publisher of @publicsq_news, a new news nonprofit based in Newark. It is modeled loosely after SCORE, the largest network of free volunteer small business mentors in the U.S.
If you’re willing to give some of your time, sign up to be a mentor! If you need a mentor, browse the database we’ll eventually publish or email us at info@centerforcooperativemedia.org and we’ll make the match!
Today is #GivingTuesday and we know you're probably buried up to your eyes in fundraising emails, but there are only a handful of non-profit newsrooms in New Jersey and we wanted to make sure you know how important it is to support them as well.
Here's a list of them!
There's @aboutbloomfield in Essex County, a community news service dedicated to making Bloomfield more informed, engaged, and resilient.
There's @Chalkbeat in Newark, with its reporters working around the clock to answer urgent questions facing NJ educators, families, school boards, and residents.
Fellows have been publishing stories over the last several months as part of #NJMediaCounts, a program managed by @10thprecinct, aimed at supporting ethnic and community news outlets in New Jersey covering the #2020Census in their communities.
(Almost all of these events are FREE, by the way. 🤗)
