The floating-above-the-fray thing seems to scratch some psychological itch for leading Dems, but it doesn’t work. It’s how you wind up responding to a coup attempt with an infrastructure bill while the coup party convinces more voters that you’re the threat to democracy.
Biden wouldn’t need to take umbrage on a personal level at all. It’s just a reminder that the former president is a wholly immoral person who should have never held office, and his loyalists in Congress share culpability for all the damage he did to America.
The above-the-fray approach also signals to the national press that it’s OK to move on.
Trump clearly, knowingly put Biden and many others at risk in a failed attempt to conceal his illness, possibly infecting or even killing people in the process. This should be an enduring scandal, but it’s hard to blame reporters when Biden essentially says NBD.
I get why Biden might want to say “I’m less concerned about Trump's willingness to kill me than to kill others who wouldn’t have access to the best care.” Or whatever. But the party should lean into the fact that he was willing to kill his opponent…
… and they should BOTH say, “We need to look at the chain of infections that stemmed from Trump's behavior so we can understand the toll of his conduct."
Go find out if he killed someone! Who participated in the coverup? Did government doctors give him palliatives to mask his symptoms? There’s a committee already constituted to investigate his handling of the pandemic. Use it!
