A combination of alpha-ketoglutarate, a natural supplement used for decades by athletes + vitamins reversed age by an average of 8 YEARS in 7 months.
Fascinating study published on 30 Nov in the Aging Journal.
A thread with all you need to know about the study 👇
Getting drugs approved for aging is hard and takes time.
Some #longevity experts have started to look at natural supplements to extend #lifespan and #healthspan in the meanwhile.
Do these supplements actually work?
The general public and the scientific community is rightfully skeptic.
But #longevity supplements companies are increasingly doing clinical trials and offering biomarker testing to show the compounds they sell, are working.
The study, in a nutshell:
# participants: 42
Supplement taken: Rejuvant®
Average duration of use: 7 months
Mean chronological age of the participants: 63y old
Authors: @BKennedy_aging@BarardoD i.a.
Results: 8 YEARS reduction in biological age aging-us.com/article/203736
So what's in Rejuvant®, what did the participants take every day:
A mix of alpha-ketoglutarate and vitamins:
Male participants: 2 gram of Calcium Alpha-Ketoglutarate+ Vitamin A
Female participant’s formulation: 2 gram of Calcium Alpha-Ketoglutarate+ Vitamin D
How did the scientist determine the 8 years reduction in biological age?
By the use of epigenetic age test.
Not everyone ages at the same rate. Our biological age is influenced by many additional factors, such as genetic background, lifestyle, and disease.
Epigenetic age tests look at DNA methylation to track how fast or slow we are aging.
These markers of biological aging represent an important tool to clinically validate the effects of longevity-based interventions.
Participants joining the study did two epigenetic age tests: one at the start as a baseline, and one at the end.
On average their biological age tests showed a biological age reduction of eight years.
There was some criticism on the study when it was published.
The main criticism was that there was no control group in the study, so biological age reduction could be attributed to a placebo effect.
@BarardoD one of the study's author replied that a controlled double-blind clinical trial is underway.
How do supplement companies do during a recession?
With the economy and stock market in the gutter 〽️ , I had a look at how vitamin businesses did during last economic downturn: the great financial crisis ( 2008)
The short answer: they are recession-proof.
Here's why 👇
Sales of supplements in the US, the biggest dietary supplement market in the world, increased during the GFC:
Three reasons:
1. increased health focus: consumers break expensive habits during economic downturns: smoking less, no more expensive Starbucks calorie bombs.
2. disease prevention and self medication: the moment you end up in the medial system in the US you lose all control about how much you will end up paying. Many Americans lost their health insurance during the GFC and turned to vitamin and supplements as alternative to drugs.
