"All my friends are dying.",
I realized as I lay on the floor contemplating how to live to 100.

I am dramatic
and obsessed with longevity.
Dramatically obsessed with #healthspan
not #lifespan.

I'm on a quest to live well for a century.

Here's the problem:
The problem:
I have no idea what health actually means.

Do we eat meat or not?
Does dairy actually cause cancer?
What about mercury in fish?
Is coffee good or bad?

There's too much conflicting information,
too many buzzwords
and @instagram was making it worse.

Frustrated, I decided to look at the places where people DID live to 100.
At least I could begin there. These places are called @BlueZones.

Dan Buettner's work studies the world's longest-lived populations and finds best practices.

Turns out, there are only 5 blue zones:

Arlan Richardson showing that JAX-housed mice, like humans, have undergone a dramatic improvement in #lifespan this century ... by reducing deaths from pathogens. #MindYourModels
Recommends looking at lifespan data as the best indicator of husbandry quality at different institutions/sources. Mean survival should be at least 27-30 months.
Example: 2003 Igf1r study showing 33% lifespan extension (in het ♀️s), but mean lifespan of controls was only 19mos. Lifespan effect largely disappeared when replicated in cohorts with longer control lifespan.
This was my go-to question for fly lifespan studies as a postdoc.

I'm often asked how to learn about #AgingBiology, which I hope this thread can address.

Will first list recommended introductory resources, then contextualize and interpret.
There's exciting progress! But also many fanciful ideas, so you can't take everything at face value.
Will mostly skip the Why/philosophy of #AntiAging, since those asking for resources are likely already bought in.

If interested I wrote a Why/Why not post back in 2016:…, and most of the websites I'll list have a version of this discussion too.
The most comprehensive #Aging primer is @ArtirKel's FAQ:
It does a great job of introducing the field, and distilling the science for non-biologists. Bonus points for contextualizing how biology is different from engineering.

1/Short thread on #Longevity
Longevity is a complex challenge, it appears that humans have a rough cap to #lifespan at about 120 years of age (even if you eat healthy, exercise and get lucky with great genes and a great environment).
2/ So the question is how can we fundamentally move past the 120 year cap? #longevity #lifespan
3/ There's promising data around #calorierestriction and #MTOR activating molecules like #rapamycin, which in other species can extend #lifespan by 10-15% (which if we're lucky, for the few it might extend the human lifespan cap to 132-138 years of age).…
