We’ve released our second experimental analysis providing insight into registered deaths of care home residents.

In 2020, the majority of care home resident deaths occurred within the care home; 86.6% in England and 83.5% Wales ow.ly/NVsO50H1FI3

There were 155,376 deaths of care home residents in 2020 in England (an increase of 18.5% compared with 2019).

In Wales there were 8,236 deaths of care home residents (an increase of 20.3%) ow.ly/NVsO50H1FI3

For males and females, dementia and Alzheimer disease remained the leading cause of death in care home residents in both England (31.1%) and Wales (32.3%).

#COVID19 was the second highest leading cause of death, accounting for 15.6% of deaths in England and 15.8% in Wales

In England there were 11,193.3 deaths per 100,000 male resident, and 7,918.8 deaths per 100,000 female resident.

This is significantly higher compared with the previous five years ow.ly/NVsO50H1FI3

In Wales there were 9,381.4 deaths per 100,000 male care home residents, and 6,773.9 deaths per 100,000 female care home residents ow.ly/NVsO50H1FI3

The North East continued to have the highest rate of care home resident deaths of English regions:  11,245.9 deaths per 100,000 care home residents.

London remained the region with the lowest, at 8,307.1 deaths per 100,000 care home residents ow.ly/NVsO50H1FI3
