Even though at times it seemed like Dickert was standing at the podium from a standing position in a canoe on the water, I thought the optics yesterday were the best, arguably, that we’ve ever had for a football coach.
Certainly, it was the most substantive account of a coach’s personality, biography, & vision that we’ve had in long, long time. But what a story he has to tell and a vision that he’s gonna sell. Is it all gonna work? I sure hope so.
As we saw this week with Brian Kelly, there are in the whole thing to win National Titles and make as much $ as possible. And there are also coaches like Matt Campbell who appear genuinely in it because they love to be able to work with, develop, and lead young men.
For those dudes, money also matters. But what matters as much, if not more, is stability—not only for their families—but for themselves. Because when you move out of the place that fits you and loves you, the payoff may be very short lived.
Dickert feels like he’s one of those guys that wants to coach and wants to grow something that he helped plant in the ground. He’s also a guy who makes it seem like its about WSU and an identity for and of the place, rather than about a singular person or philosophy.
And that's inspiring
I liked that he noted that he wants an explosive offense that is unique and that fits WSU. That’s a winner. He’s gonna chuck it AND he’s gonna run it. Can’t wait for the announcement of the OC hire. #Winning
I continue to like the line about tailoring an offense around players instead of plays. I also liked that he said he’s going to build the offense around JDL. Does that mean JDL is staying? Who knows? But it seems like an odd to comment to make if he didn’t think so. #winning
The coming weeks are going to be challenging as Dickert has to deal with hiring, staff changes and fall-out. And then also recruiting his best players to stay with him. Such is the new role of Head Ball Coaches—recruiting your own players to stay each year.
I’m sure we’re gonna lose some guys during this time and even more sure that he’s going to make some mistakes.....
But, as I said earlier in the week, Jake is a guy that I can lose with—and a guy that I am going to really love winning with. Congrats @pat_chun#Wazzu on the great hire. This is the right guy, for the right moment, at the right place. Let’s go get that bowl win! <end> #GoCougs

A few *deep thoughts* about @CoachDickert before Thursday’s press conference. THREAD-->
There are several concerns about Dickert that have been issued on the cybers. Many of them have merit and some of them can be allayed.
Concern #1. He doesn’t have experience. Well, that really isn’t a good concern. Dickert went 3-2 against good comp, losing a game we could have won against #12 in the current playoff rankings and losing another on the road to an Oregon team we don’t match up with. No bad L's.
